I have a computer that is currently running a copy of Ubuntu linux.. the problem is - its hooked up to a monitor i use to test hardware configurations, or just my extra monitor...
so here is my questions (in order and please try to answer all)

1) ultraVnc --> is that the easiest way to remote into a linux machine via windows operating systems (both xp and vista ultimate)

2) eventually i want to run "putty" - isnt putty the linux forum of IRC.. basically i want to turn this system in a irc chat client -- let it sit in my closent wired to the internet and just BE THERE but out of the way of my desk...

-> i do have a desire to make it secure but ill be the only one login into it so i am not worried about the SSL/SSH issues

thanks in advance for the help

Putty is used to SSH into another computer.

Actually, the easiest way to access a linux computer through a windows machine is through Putty. (though no GUI will be seen, it is command line only)

If you want it to be a chat client, give it an extra monitor, and have it run Miranda or Pidgin with full GUI.

If your just starting out, I would recommend trying Suse 11 with KDE 3 or 4 first. I found it much much more logical to use than Ubuntu.

I am sorry to say, but having it the way you described is going to be counter productive, you want it to be out of the way for chatting, yet you will have to remote into it to get the chat. What you could look into doing is what I have seen many times, and that is having an extra monitor for just the linux machine running a full GUI, and give it a mouse and keyboard. That way if you are overclocking, or playing a game, you just look over and can see / reply to chats.

Yah I would just SSH and use a cli IRC client or just not use the computer at all. IRC isn;t a good enough reason to have a completely different computer setup. I use my Linux box as a file server and for chatting and even firefox when I'm playing wow on my main comp but it has it's own keyboard and monitor and whatnot.

If I were you I'd try to find a cheap CRT at a garage sale ;)
