im not really sure which forum to put this thread under, so if it needs moved, its ok :P i rebooted my computer with my iPod connected to it still. i've NEVER seen it do this before, but it kept freezing on boot from cd. it would say boot from cd twice, and it would just sit there. i ended up having to disconnect my iPod from my computer to get past that. like i said, i've rebooted my pc plenty of times with the oPod connected, and its never done this on boot up. any thoughts or ideas?

also, can anybody suggest a decent free system utility? my system is running kinda slow and choppy lately, im thinking i need to do a little defrag and whatnot to it.

USB storage devices on boot will keep some PCs from booting up depending on what data is on it.

If you changed the order of the boot devices, or recently changed hard drives in the machine that could do it.

no, i didn't change the boot order, or add or take out any hard drives. i haven't even been in bios since i had to reformat windows. and after i did the reformat, it didn't do this. first time today. just found it really, really odd, and wondering if something could cause this without me personally changing settings.

Hi, if a CD is present in the optical drive can make a difference, especially the Windows one. (For example, on one of my systems, the computer will freeze if I boot from my Windows XP CD while the hard drive is connected. Fortunately, it's a SATA drive so I don't need to plug it in until I load the SATA driver floppy to get the installation to recognize it.)

1. chkdsk /f
2. Get Dial-a-fix and execute every fixes
3. CCleaner (don't forget it's registry cleaner)
4. Auslogics Free Registry Defrag.
5. Re-enable Task Manager service if you disabled it.
6. Re-enable pre-fetching if you disabled it in the registry.
7. In Dial-a-fix, click the hammer button, launch Process Idle Tasks.
8. Remove Windows Messenger and NetMeeting:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msnetmtg.inf,NetMtg.Remove

make sure that the ipod isnt plugged in . the bios sees the ipod as a storage device ( hdd ) and put it as a primary drive in the bios options ... will this happen again , if its left in the compy yes it can , how can you allieviate this problem ? well you can set bios options on the hdds order to set it to primary hdd ( consider it may happen again ) or just unplug the device when not in use ... it happens to me a lot when i leave my 512 meg flash drive hooked up .... bios doesnt tell the difference between flash drive or hdd ...

but again, i say that its never happened before. why, all of a sudden, did it start doing it at that random day/time? i can understand it if i changed any bios settings, but i haven't touched bios in a couple of weeks, nothings changed in there. so im just not understanding why, suddenly, it started doing this with no reason for it.

As a tech believe me it just happens. The other day I had a guys machine not boot becuase his printer was on before his computer booted up. He left his camera hooked to the printer and it thought the cameras sd card was an hd.

HAHAHA, I would not doubt it....I have had some weird things like that happen as well. I had a printer freak out and printed weird symbols then all of a sudden one day it just stopped. I think my computer was trying to call home or something in another galaxy...

I always had this problem. If i connect my USB drive before POSt, Bios tries to boot from it & fails. It can happen with anything that has non-volatile memory in it & can be used as an External storage device.
