Just bought a Gainward 8800gt 512 golden sample for another rig I have, very cheap but I read somewhere that the early one's had a overheat problem which was the heatsink not being flat does anyone have any experience of these

The Golden Samples should have a dual-slot cooler on them, which is supposed to outperform the reference single slot design. That would be pretty lame if they actually cooled worse.

The article I read said that the first one's of these had this problem and after lapping the heatsink and replacing the thermal compound it worked fine but if that's still the case I dont know , But I have just realised that the mobo I was going to use it on has a via 880 ultra chipset so that might be a problem ??

VIA PT880 Ultra should support PCIe or AGP. Even if the slot is PCIe 1.0 the card should still be backwards compatible.

Via Chipsets don't work with the 8800GT's.

Yep that's what I thought ! Doh! But if I get two I can sli them in my 650i rig and use the 8600gt from the 650i rig with the via 880 ultra , I'm fairly sure the 8600gt will work with the via it would still be better than the 7600gt thats in the via mobo ATM
