View Full Version : Quad sli PSU's??

I see alot of them advertised. however, when I look at the specs they list 3) 6 pin and 3) 8, or 6+2 pin pci-e connectors. this will not run 4 video cards that take one of each connector. so what PSU's do actually have the needed 8 pci-e connectors? preferably 80+ certified. modular is also a plus but not a requirement.

most newer psu's all use a 6+2 configuration. that you are going to have to look at each and every PSU you want and see if it has at least 8 6+2 PCI-E connectors.
here is one with a lot of connectors HERE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438003)

I only need 8, that has 15. and the price is a bit steep for me. I'm hoping to find something around $150 or less. i've seen several in that range that claim quad but only have 6 connectors...
what do you think of this?

I've had a true power 550 for a couple years that still works fine (replaced it with the one in my sig)

over at geforce.com there is a list of PSU certified for different sli config: http://www.geforce.com/#/Hardware/PowerSupplies
it's a good place to start checking.

Or how about running two PSU's in one case?

Been there it's ultra (and the model they list doesn't have connections for 4 cards) or something that better be platinum plated for the price they want.

thought about that but the case I have my eye on is the T-T Armor+. it has the 10 slots for quad sli tons of room but only space for one PSU. the one I'm using now won't fit the quad set up. and at this point i'm window shopping to see what's avalible. gotta get up the fundage in pieces. the plan is the amor case, a foxconn destroyer, my buddy's 945 cpu when he gets his x6, a bit of ddr2, a hdd,and i think i got everything else here. I will however happily take any donated parts anyone want to ship my way.
thanks for that link tho' i'll keep that in mind. I wonder if having the 6 pins on one psu and the 8's on the other would cause a problem. my luck it would melt the system case and all....

I would Keep all the plugs that a card needs on the same PSU mixing would scare me
ya could prolly ghetto rig the other PSU to run out of the extra 5.25 bays

I have the plan to run a tri sli setup, with dual PSU's... but i have to mod the heck out of my case.(which is a beat to pulp sunami dream) ATM the plan is to use part of an old compaq to make a housing for the second psu. (who says they are good for nothing) I have to get everything together, and make some measurements but I really think it will work. already tested the switch and wire for on off. got the basic layout for which wires will go where, next step is strip out the case, and do some mock-ups to make sure before I commit. my new board should be here by sat june 4. I want to at least have it working if not finished with body and paint. I'll get some pics as i go and put them up in the mod forum. (just in case someone cares to see how it works)

thanks, but I already started the mod, (yes i took pics) and it will be far cheaper than buying a third PSU. not to mention more fun.

Busting out the dremel is always fun that's how I made my case useable

the dremmel wasn't cutting it. well it WAS cutting it, it was just burning thru the disks way to fast, so i changed tools. stay tuned to the mod forum for details later today.

What no plasma cutter? I am disappointed. ;-)

What is this overkill you speak of? What is that?

actually i lost my patience, got frustrated, and grabbed a sawzall. No, i'm not kidding.
this is a low budget mod. i'd have to buy a plasma cutter so it wasn't even considered. so far I have spent $0 on this. and it's almost done.

ok I forgot I don't have photoshop on this system, and i'm not using paint (I hate paint). so the full version will be posted this weekend. instead I'll just skip to (almost) the end. and post a pic of the completed housing. I will at some point work on the cosmetics of the system. but it's gonna wait till I have every thing else done. that fan hole is now hidden. the thumbnail is the box.

to be honest, after the sawzall so was I. it wound up about 1/8- 3/16 of an inch shorter than my my original layout due to a bad cut from that saw.

See Black knows there is no such word as overkill!

I wish i knew some one with a band saw. that would have made short work of it.
BTW overkill=using something that renders your part unsalvagable. like if I had fired up the cutting torch for this. or went at it with a cold chisel. (I did use a wood chisel at one point ;-) )

that grinder prolly made quick work that would be my first modding choice if I had one
Blacksmith1
06-01-2011, 02:21 PM
it did, and worked very well while giving me an acurate cut. like I said it's what I should have started with.
if i ever cut a steel case in half again that's what I'll use. for aluminum, I'll stick to my dremmel. and the grinder is too big to cut fan holes with.
