double slot cards and clearances

I'm trying to set up my new board, asus M3N_HT deluxe, and the pcie slots are exactly 2 slots apart. so the cards are touching for practical purposes. yes there has to be space at least on the sub atomic level but the only space i see is a sliver where the fan is due to the housing being at a slight angle right there.
is this safe? i don't want to cook these cards.
