What would you consider "too high" for a rig that is not running 24/7? I have one rig in a non AC'ed room that runs 24/7 so I don't worry as much but my other machine is in the basement and I do shut it down at night. I struggle to keep the humidity down below 65%.
Any thoughts?

most hardware has a figure for humidity in the specs. try looking at your OEM's sites to see if they post it.

Dehumidifier? I had my PC in my tent when the humidity was 100% before (really really really damp in the tent) and it wsa fine. Long as it isn't completely water then your good cause I think the humidity would just evaporate when it gets around the heatsinks.

Most home electronics have to have some compensation for humidity. Not everyone can live in the desert. Humidity is bad in all the areas I have lived, and never had problem with moisture damage to any of my equipment. Now if you throw it in a flooded basement, that's a different story.

If its not dripping it should be fine.

plus if it's running 24/7 the heat inside the case should evaporate any moisture inside

josh and I both live in FL where the humidity gets above 90% in the summer. unless the air is saturated and the temp drops you don't have to worry about condensation. the mosture in air can only affect your stuff that way.

Yea welcome to Florida where in the summer you can be just as wet in a pool as standing in the heat next to it.

Gracias for the humidity info. I feel a bit better. I am more of a dry heat person myself. Not trying to spark a climate change debate, but having lived mainly in the midwest for 40 plus years, it does seem to me that it is getting hotter faster in the summer here.

Yeah but when you go to summer home in Alaska you'll have to contend with the damn mosquitoes and black flies.

You'll just be missing the roaches

Just been to Hong Kong, and wow. it's so humid there, the moment I walk out I see water on myself. Same temperature in Taiwan, but no sweating. In Hong Kong you can feel the heaviness of the air and how moist it is. Very disguising, but survivable. I had my macbook pro there and nothing happened. But that was only for a short time.

My computers are in the basement too and I invested in a dehumidifier a few years ago. I also have a small 5200 btu Window AC unit for the Summer.

Whats a basement? Wait we have those in Florida we call them pools.
Blacksmith1
06-10-2011, 02:06 AM
up in St. Pete, Fl they call them boiler rooms. but only in the houses built on artificial hills in the 1920's they are about 6ft x 5ft x 5 1/2ft tall

Ditto. I have always liked basements. I need a man cave.

then you need an attic, a shed, a garage, or some scuba gear for the pool ;)
