View Full Version : Upgrading router-need suggestions

So I am moving Sunday, and will be needing to upgrade my wireless/wired router for faster wireless speeds. There are several I am looking at, but I need opinions and ideas. I want dual-band and wireless N with ability to pick up multiple frequencies, being 2.4, 5 whatever. My budget is a tad limited so I can't go over $130 preferably.

This is one I was looking at, and it's lesser half without the gigabit since I don't have a gigabit card, and my computer will probably be the only one hard wired. Seems decent to me for either version.

This one makes me wonder a bit. For such a low price, how well does it do?
I know there are many more brands and version, but these are my choices right now. Thoughts, opinions?

Out of those 2 options #1 would be better. #2 I'd say is crap.
Things to keep in mind when selecting a router in my humble opinion:
- weather it uses MIMO technology, not sure what it does but helps with getting those rated speeds
- gigabit port wont make your internet speed faster since no ISP provides that kind of speed
- antenae strength
- make sure your getting at least 270 or better speeds on your network( not what the router claims but what you get real time)
I use a Hercules router: LINK (http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-HWNR-300-Wireless-N-Router/dp/B003XVUGZW)
Got it for 20$ at Mwave when it first showed up on market, best buy I ever made. Only issue I ever had with it is when my doughter flips through netflix cartoons like mad and pauses them while others are using the net, then it locks up and needs a reset. I use a Netgear WNDR 3300 as a repeater client by my TV and have no issues streaming VUDU at HDX quality or avi's from my pc.
I think Scott has a post in this section on a pretty nice netgear router worth looking into too.

I went ahead and purchased the N600 without the gigabyte router. The d-link looked nice but would have been almost a week before I would be able to get it from anywhere without paying a lot extra for shipping.
Once I get better settled in my new place, going to check the range and wireless speeds.
Thanks for the offer James. May take you up on it if I decide I don't like this one.
