Japanese Supercomputer Claims World's Fastest Title

A Japanese supercomputer built by Fujitsu Co. grabbed the title of world's best-performing machine from a Chinese competitor, returning Japan (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/japan.htm#r_src=ramp) to the top of the computer arms race for the first time in seven years.
Installed at Japan's Institute of Physical and Chemical Research and also known as Riken, the Japanese government-funded "K Computer (http://www.fujitsu.com/global/about/tech/k/whatis/project/)" performs more than 8 quadrillion (8,000 trillion) calculations per second. K Computer is a play on the Japanese word "kei" for the number 10 quadrillion, which will be the number of calculations the machine aims to handle once it is completed in 2012.
In an era marked by China's growing technological and economic emergence, the return to the top of the supercomputer heap will be a source of pride for Japan only a few months after China overtook it as the world's second-biggest economy.
The machine is more powerful than the next five computer systems combined and can perform three times as many calculations per second as the No. 2 supercomputer designed by China's National University of Defense Technology.

I want one. But can it fold?

I wonder how many calculations per second the F @ H program has going on. I'll bet we beat that thing ;)

I would like to find a list that has Folding@home, Boinc, and Bitcoins power on it to compare.

any list wouldbe an approximation, as there is simply no way to know how many cores are folding at any given momment. I mean just look at our own team #'s.

The smart money is on Hal 9000.

An approximated list would be fine. Just to have an Idea.

What makes the new supercomputer especially interesting is that it uses only CPUs to deliver all 8.16 petaflops, and eschews any graphics processors or other accelerators. Specifically, the K Computer is comprised of 68,544 eight core SPARC64 VIIIfx processors, which amounts to 548,352 processing cores. When the supercomputer enters service at the Riken AICS, it will be capable of even more performance. Specifically, it will deliver more than 10 petaflops using 80,000 of the eight core SPARC CPUs (640,000 cores).
Can't find any PPD per chip but with 640,000 cores it's prolly some awesome PPD

if that's alll it has then the FOLDING @ HOME program has it beat. with more than 1/2 a million users going alot of who use more than a single core to run their cilent.
I personaly belive that the F@H arraingment is the worlds most powerful super computer. even tho it's actually many different systems.

Thanks for that material Black. I am gonna post it by my toilet for reading material. Also I think the Bitcoin net work might be more powerful than F@Home.

My colorblindness would make using the Sonovac very interesting.
