I kind of wonder what the whole story is...if she has lived there around 50 years..how is it not paid off and what the heck does the bank have to do with it now?

reverse mortgage guarantees you won't get forclosed. basicly they are buying it from you on payments and however much they pay you before you dies buys it. which is why they only offer it to those they think they will pay less than the value of the properity.
