View Full Version : Show off your rig!

I looked, i think, almost everywhere in this forum, and i don't saw a topic where the member can show their computer in photo. So, I propose to dedicate this topic to it. So, just post a photo of the interior of your computer and maybe explain the thematic if it have one, the choice the component, etc.
So, mine:
http://www.cowcotland.com/images/config/img-1381.jpg
http://www.cowcotland.com/images/config/img-1382.jpg
A photo in the dark for the blue led effect (nota bene: i change screen since this photo...)
http://www.cowcotland.com/images/config/img-1205.jpg
Like you can see, i choose a general blue-black-white/metal thematic with blue led.
The only exception are the ram, because of the lack of blue ram in trichannel...

Very nice Martin, I don't necessarily have an up to date photo of the inside of my rig, but will have to take one once I move my stuff over to the Phantom 820 chassis by NZXT. But here is my working area for those that are interested:

I have tidied up cables since I took this pic the other night, but here is my setup. No real aim to things since I didn't buy over half of what is in here.

Martin are those the Corsair SP fans(Static Pressure model). How are they? I was thinking of ordering some for my radiators. Effective, but noisy compared to my old Noctua at full speed. But it's true that their max speed is more high than the speed of my old Noctua. At low, they are silent.

I just got in the parts for the testbench and I'm building it as we speak. The tesbench will be right next to the other computer on the right side of the desk. Basically far right corner. As soon as I have it set up, I'll take pictures. :) Also, I up upgrading my current desktop PC to the NZXT Switch 820 chassis, so I'll post a picture of the complete system as well. :)

My cooler died as well last week so awaiting new one, as I hate air coolers for some reason still, just too bulky? hah.
Btw can you spot 2 products I will be reviewing sometime this month? =) For those who dont know what my reviews were so far, No its not the memory.
They all stick out, well besides one... Ill just say that one of them has something to do with my Fan on the radiator, and the others allow better cable management =P

Every Westerndigital Hard drive I have owned still somewhere in this house running 100%SSDs are dirt cheap and getting cheaper. You can get a 128GB SSD for less than 100 which is 5x faster than a standard 7200RPM drive. It can carry your OS and a ton of programs which will see an increase with faster loading times and your hybrid can store whatever else you may need.
Funny how I'm the complete opposite. The only WD drive I've ever had last longer than a year is my external. Probably because it hardly gets used. All of my server drives are Seagate minus 1 which is an F3 that I got for free.

SSD's are not cheap enough, its still around 1$ a gig, and Im not spending cash when I need around 250gb+ which is around 250-300$+
5x faster does not mean much to mean anyways, as it hardly makes a improvement to anything besides boot times that I would use it for.
My rig is on 24/7 meaning the boot time is really not required by me, I play mainly Online games which SSD's make no difference in, and any Offline games only take like 5 secs to load up on a hdd, compared to like 2 secs on a SSD.
I just dont find it Viable for me to spend that sort of Cash to try to find what its best at for me.
Also WD HDD's you always get Caviar Black drives usually, They are the toughest, I still have drives about 12+years old from WD all perfect working order, been Zero'ed to formatted each atleast 100times each.
Caviar black and Western Digital all the way for me =)

Oh btw, dont take anything I say to heart, I just sound mean haha, its how I type XD.You must not have used an SSD before. I'll let you hold that thought until you finally have one in your main rig then have to go back to using a HDD again. You'll never say this again, and SSD users will agree. I have been using SSDs since first gen (around 08) and they were barely faster than standard drives in raw speed, but the latency and access times are what kills regular HDDs. I have a Samsung F3 and Seagate 7200.11 1TB in my server and neither can mimic the everyday use performance of even that first gen SSD which was 150/90 sequential. I now have a Vertex 2 which is about double the performance of a standard "fast" drive in raw performance but everyday performance matches that of my friends Agility 3. That being said, you can get a 240GB Vertex 2 off Newegg brand new for 150 and I'm sure once the holidays come around that will go down further. Trust me when I say, 4 years ago I used to be the one that needed my 500GB drive to install all my useless junk (I would install almost all of my games at once, the whole Adobe Creative Suite, you get the picture) and once I got that 64GB SSD I didn't see much of a "difference". So I put it in my laptop and 2 weeks later it was back in my system and I have never looked back. Like I said, you wont understand this until you use an SSD everyday for a while and go back to a HDD. That is when you go, holy balls, never again. No hybrid drive, cache drive, or even a Velociraptor can give you that fluidity and snappiness of an SSD.

hah, I dont doubt the speed, I got a harddrive from Joshua awhile back it was a 30gb, I did some stuff on it, as well as using it as my laptops HDD as my seagate hdd died in it.
I personally dont use the laptop for anything but internet to watch stuff in my room on my bed haha. as this laptop is going to die at somepoint soon.
But when I was using it on my main computer, I just seen no benefit to gaming for online games or bearly offline games.
of course with todays modern ssd's it may be different but still not a option for me as I cant just buy a ssd that simple.

Martin, please take your time with your computer. Any computer can look sexy, you just need to take your time, sometimes completely redo cable management. Take each peace of hardware out of your system, slowly dust it off, fans as well with finger, and compressed air, use a vacuum to suck out the dust from your case, and redo the cables, and you're system will look very sexy too. It's all about keeping it clean, taking your time and slowly thinking about how you can make it better. Having lots of zip ties helps a lot.
For those wondering, it took me from 6PM till about 1AM to build the system, 30 min to clean up, 15 min to take photos. So about 7 hours to move from one system, dust off, vacuum, take out cables, dust those off as well, place in motherboard, memory, processor and CPU cooler, then took about an hour to figure out the case connectors, because there were 12 fan headers on the Phantom 820 due to the fan controller on the top, and once all the case cables were completely tucked away from sight and plugged into the system, that's when I throw in the power supply and took everything step by step. Might have used about 20 zip ties.
I could have thrown all the hardware in there in 15 min and be done with it, but instead spent 7 hours on it and I think it was worth it. Well 7 hours with dinner, snacks, and doing other stuff as well.
Martin_B
11-10-2012, 12:47 AM
Trust me Peti, cable menagement is something I take my time to do :)
If it's now a mess, its because i needed to search for a 8 pin in my cables, for my new GTX 670, who were hided behind my motherboard and I don't have other choice than cut 2 tie for that...
So, the majority of the cables are free now because of that... ^^'

I find cable management iffy, just due to the fact if your case has enough space behind, or your PSU cables are bunched up ect. Such as mine.
Also it matters if you use Front panel connectors or not and all that.
Also matters where and how many cable management areas you have, and if your PSU if right up or upside down for intake ect.
Its all a serious thing to take into consideration and can fall flat after you start ziptieing everything down.
This always happens to me... Especially when I have to turn sata cables upside down and everything, turning into something I cant do such as 2x or more 5.25in bay drives that require sata power, because PSU's tend to like to have upside down connections and it just looks horrible, and they are not spaced out enough ect.

Takes me no time at all for cable management. Maybe it's just I'm so used to moving parts around.
Edit: As for the SSD convo. The HDD is the slowest piece of any computer, and an SSD only fixes that by a little. For games the only 2 I noticed a serious improvement was Skyrim and Battlefield 3. Friends would get pissed that I'm loaded and in a map way before them with their slow HDDs lol. On a standard drive vanilla Skyrim isn't too bad, but when you start loading on the HD mods it takes longer and longer to load and an SSD really does help that a lot. The greatest benefit to an SSD is general PC usage. Thing is, you don't really notice the difference until you have used an SSD as your main drive for a while then have to go back for whatever reason. The difference is that subtle, but there enough to piss you off when you are stuck on a HDD again.
Martin_B
11-11-2012, 12:29 AM
Yep, i agree. When I work on my laptop who have only a HDD, i can really feel the difference. With a SSD, all is like automatic, direct. But it's true that it's a big investment for one with a good size and who are of good quality. But you can make like me and try to win one in a giveaway. It's like that i got mine. If you are lucky, you will maybe be able to win one of the two SSD of the giveaway of this forum also. :)

Very nice Martin! I like it a lot. You know I built so many systems and cable management is difficult to get right the first time. And even now when I feel I'm pretty good at it, I still learn new things and try out new things on my future builds, eventually what you think used to be awesome is **** already. :P You did a great job with the case you have and the type of hardware you're running (Non-modular PSU).
Edit: I see you tied together the SATA cables and some other cables as well from your previous pictures. One thing to consider for future cable management, though you can still do it without too much problem. You can also zip tie the PCI-E power connectors together to make it looks like it's only one cable going up and then dividing into two pieces, and you can also reroute the SATA cables to go by the side of the back of the motherboard tray, down where you have the gray cables, and then zip tie the sata cables to the gray cables, making it look like there is even less cables, but technically you are only routing it with the other cables. :)

Aftermarket GPU coolers here are either hard to find or not available at all. There are no artic products sold here as far as I know even in my country's capital city. Some do acquire one but they were bought outside (probably in the US like newegg).
ANyway, I found an interesting gpu mod using antec kuhler. Fortunately, CPU coolers here are available but not as plenty compared to the US market. Here's the work log I found. The guy is only using CABLE TIES!! so that really got me interested. :)

There are so many similar mods now, Some did use H50 but it was relatively hard they say since the tubes are relatively stiff and angled 90 degrees. (I use an H50 as well).

Tension and zip-ties.
How much play in the cables do you guys allow? Also, I have used velcro straps in the past over zip-ties. I noticed several of you using zips. Better?
PP Mguire
11-12-2012, 10:36 PM
I use zip ties because I have a ton of them. I use moderate tension on the cables are it doesn't really harm them.
peti1212
11-12-2012, 10:52 PM
I use zipties only. I hate the velcro ties. When I use zipties, I tie it down as hard as I can, sometimes I even accidently even break a few zipties just by pulling too hard. Also I usually have quite a bit of tension on my cables, but not at the connector parts. Those parts are usually loose enough so I would not damage the leads.

Holy crap that's a nice test bench! I thought it was some new crazy design for a PC, just an open air showoff thing for displaying just as you did there, not for testing. it looks like something you'd leave setup for use as is...
Here's my rig, I call it RGB Panda. I'm a photographer and I needed a photoshop/editing rig and I fell in love with NZXT's Phantom 410. Seeing as how my work is color oriented and colors (at least digitally displayed colors) are made from RGB pixels, I ran with that idea.
I wanted I a clean simple black/white theme build with colorful lighting. I achieved that with NZXT's Hue controller and RGB LED tape, Geil Black Dragon ram with red LED lights, and an extra NZXT blue LED fan up top (somewhat custom, these are not sold separately so I found one used). When I have the Hue controller set to green I have a nice Red ram, Blue top fans, and finally Green case lighting, completing the color scheme coming from my rig. I do like changing its colors but I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. I hope you think the same!
I JUST finished the wire tucking and removed the hard drive bay, installed extra fans and I had some decals I figured I would find a place for. Here are some images:

Lol good idea on that dedicated GPU cooling. Wouldit be more effective to remove the shroud and just keep the heatsink? I imagine that the air flowing down doesn't really help the intake, especially with the small gap b/w the two cards.
Anyways, thanks for folding.

Water back in. I was bored yesterday so it gave me something to do. Tubing looks nasty because I had to reuse my old tube but it gets the job done. This block really isn't made for these CPUs though, so I need to grab a new EK for 2011 support when I get a new board. Still, dropped my load temps 15c at least. Took 2 of my drives out and added a 2TB so I don't have a floating drive anymore. Dropped the RAM down to the 8GB Ripjaws due to the 8GB sticks possibly causing me instability issues.

Scratch the 98 box. It pissed me off so I tossed it in the closet.

Are those the clear lowes tubing and you have black coolant in it or is the tubing just black?
Nice and clean btw.

On his FB page he said he bought 20ft of black tubing from Lowes so I'm assuming it's black.

If you plan on doing a custom loop with it at 0.25c/ft then I suggest going and buying like 20ft of it. Lowes is going to sell it off and not bring it back. I used to buy the clear tubing because I never noticed this stuff.

You mean like the ThermalTake Bigwater 760+ or w/e? Meh, she didn't want to spend too much money on this as I got her the core components for a total of $35 ;).
All she bought herself was the PSU, 250GB Samsung-840, Optical drive, and 2TB WD-Red. $420 was enough spending for her she said.

Why a Red drive? I would have gone cheaper with a Seagate Barracuda and got similar performance.
Nice clean rig. Idk if it's the picture or what, but the gray is just peeling my eyes.

Because the 2TB Reds were all that Fry's had in stock when we made the drive down there. I wanted her to buy the 1TB Red as anything more than that was going to be overkill, but she had to get overkill because that's all they had, haha.
I told her that she would have saved more money if we did the shopping online on NewEgg, but she insisted that we go down to Fry's as that would be more "fun" to do. And, she's right about that last part.

That makes sense.
I was at Fry's today. Dude who was helping Mariah was a total douchenozzle. Tried telling me this Acer laptop had USB3. I was like um no, I can clearly see it has no blue ports. I lold. I got a new joystick though :)
