Haven't blown / cleaned it out in a while. The clean streak there across the video card was from the night before from me opening the case and my daughter "checking" out my system.

Test fit with my new video card. As soon as I did this, I had a gut feeling that my video card wasn't going to fit. I did a few test fits with the top HDD tray with the 250GB HDD installed in both slots to see if it was going to fit or not. It doesn't. I need the case to be about a half in longer in order for the card to fit. :annoyed:

Specs here are:
Intel i5-3570k
8GB (2x 4GB) AMD - By Patriot - RAM
ASUS P8 Z77-VLK
PowerColor 7870 Myst Edition
Sparkle-Nala 1250w PSU
3x 320GB HDD, 500GB HDD
If the 250GB HDD would have fit, that would have been my OS drive. Now, I'm going to have to do a 3x RAID 0 array which I didn't want to do. I might end up partitioning the array, but that will just defeate the purpose of having RAID 0 IMO.
I forgot the side panels at work, so right now it's missing those. Also, I haven't had the time to install windows as of yet. I should have time for that tomorrow.

An SSD is ij the plans to add to my system. Just not now. It'll probably be the next thing I get.
Now, if I only got one of those Kingston SSDs from the Holiday give away competition :)

That's precisely it. I will get a BR-RW drive later on to replace the IDE drive. Not sure if I want to keep my Vantec fan controller, but skeeping that may be the only place where I can install the SSD later on (the SSD would be directly behind the fan controller).
But, now that I'm thinking of all this, I think I might have to upgrade the MoBo as well since this board only has 6 SATA ports and me writing all this is making me realize that I need a MoBo with 7 SATA ports...

Excellent build. Why no liquid cooling? Would love to know how the AMD memory functions and the longevity of the PSU. I have never used a Sparkle – unless it is rebranded under another name.

There's no liquid cooling because it cost money . This system build really only cost me $80 as several of the big dollar parts were gifted to me. The rest was attained through me selling some extra stuff I had lying around that I didn't use anymore. The RAM *should* work. At least according to Patriot's (http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/detail.jsp?prodline=9&catid=34&prodgroupid=226&id=1171&type=1) website, it's "100% compatible with Intel and AMD motherboards". The PSU is from the company next door to my work. We use their PSUs for testing on our test benches. My friend that works there gave one out to me when I told him I was building a new system. As for where the PSU actually comes from, it is indeed a rebranded PSU. The PSU is a Magic Power PSU (http://www.mgpower.com/) which is typically known for their industrial PSUs and not commercial PSUs.

I got the RAM for free from AMD. Originally this was going to be an all AMD build as I got the RAM and CPU from AMD at an AMD event back in October. I just needed the MoBo and video card, but then a friend gave me the i5-3570 and that changed my entire perspective on the system build. Since I already had the RAM, I wasn't going to go out and buy new RAM.
This system will be upgraded over time with more RAM, an SSD, perhaps a BR drive, a different PSU, case swap, and a few other things I can't remember right now. But those will all be over time. The first one to happen will likely be the SSD though.

I think the neatness and order of build largely depend on the case. The chassis layout determines everything X____X
in most generic cases sold here in my country (from China of course!) have a build-in drive cage which I personally find dangerous for the drives after learning that is should have some sort of cushioning to absorb vibrations.
Also, your non-modular PSU cable management is just perfect X_X
I kinda hate myself for not having the patience to do the same. Do you hack or shorten the cables if you find them too long?

Really? Why is that?
And thanks. I took some more pictures during this process. I decided to remove the fan controller in the process because the mod I was trying to do couldn't happen since I dont have the tools needed for the mod. The sucky lart about it though is that I now have a gaping 5.25in hole in the front of my case. Basically, the end result woukd have left me with the fan controller and the HDD directly behind the fan controller covering the hole I now have open.

It really doesn't matter. They will run in dual either way. Few of the high ups had that convo with me and quad in the old Intel board. Programs and benchmarks were all identical in either configuration.

It is what it states in the manual to your motherboard. However the only time i noticed a difference was when going for insane mem clocks on my M4E. Most P/Z67 Z77 mobos are this way.

I don't see him trying for 2400MHz on cheap AMD RAM honestly. It's been this way since DDR days that you need absolutely matched RAM in specific slots to do dual channel but that isn't true. My SLI-DR has mis-matched DDR occupying all 4 slots still running in dual with no performance difference compared to my G.Skill 1GB sticks in either channel (besides less RAM capacity). The same in my DX79SI board with the Patriot 32GB set. I had the 4 sticks in the outside slots and was being told they need to be in the blue slots for quad. It's also what the manual said, but it didn't matter the configuration and benchmarks didn't change either.

Currently installing win7 on my system. TBH, I was a bit scared of my system not POSTing because I never did that before putting it all together. Glad that part is over :)
Since this is my first UEFI system, it took me quite a bit of time to get familiar with the BIOS (which I'm still not familiar with). I can't get the RAID setup. It's all setup in the BIOS to accept it, but during boot when it asks me for CTRL + I to go to RAID setup, it won't accept the CTRL + I command.

Yea, the SSD is going to be my primary drive. The RAID 0 will still be for all my games and stuff. And I made that decision primarily based on the fact that I like to horde all my games and 240GB just won't be enough :-P.
3x 320GB 16MB 7200 RPM drives in RAID 0 should be pretty quick still :)
I've already installed my OS on the 250GB drive. Once I get the SSD in, I'm going to just ghost over the drive to the SSD so I don't have to install the OS and everything all over again.

Having two optical drives is pointless let alone a Bluray burner and DVD burner; and replacing a HDD by backing up your data on Bluray discs would be a waste of $ (unless you are rich).

I already have a 1/2TB HDD in my system and that's already 80% full or so. I need to change that out to a 2TB or larger HDD pretty soon. Realistically though, I'd want to swap it out for 2x 2TB HDDs and set them up on a RAID 1. I'm just that paranoid about data integrity :-P.
And a BR-RW was in my plans originally, but now not so much. A BR-R is all I really need since this system is also my HTPC.

Though I don't find myself burning as much anymore so I think going to a one optical drive system would be more practical now.

You guys saw this a few posts back. If you've forgotten about this, I tried to mount this directly behind my Vantec fan controller so I wouldn't be left with a gaping 5.25in hole in the front of my case.

I just needed to drill a couple of holes is all. Problem was, I have no drill. That was the first problem.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69203732/Forum%20Uploads/ASUS%20Z77%20System%20Build/1226121953.jpg
The second problem popped up when I started messing around with the adjustment holes of the bracket. All that messing around eventually caused one of the screw holes to strip.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69203732/Forum%20Uploads/ASUS%20Z77%20System%20Build/1226122101.jpg
So, I gave up and just stuck with the big gaping hole in the front. Personally, I'm not happy about it. I'll see if I can score a cover later down the line or something to get rid of the hole.

@ CDs :- Get an SSD as your boot drive. And get a 4TB or 2 x 2 TB WD Caviar Blacks. But you really do not need to put your storage drives on RAID.Most people I know prefers a 120-128GB as a Boot Drive & a 2-4TB as storage drives. You don't even need WD Blacks. As storage drives , even WD Greens will be good enough.Blacks are power hungry.Greens will save you a couple of $ in your power bills & will do the job fine. :)
Install one game at a time & all your programs on SSD.I really don't think anyone would require to put more than 100GB of data on their boot drive.Install the OS , Games & all apps on your SSD & use your Mechanical drives for storage/backup.Even a cheapest quality SSD will be much much better & faster than a RAID array. And if you install everything on the SSD , you really wouldn't require a RAID array for your backup drives.

During cable installation, I came to realize that the power and SATA cables didn't reach. The power cable just needed a little bit more slack, no biggie. The SATA cable however, didn't fit. Since it was a 90 degree cable and the mounting itself was closer to the front of the case. This made it so that the bottom portion of the cable hit the optical drive and make it so it doesn't attach to the SSD.

My big-ol hands couldn't reach the SATA cables with the video card installed, so I took it out!

Thanks :).
BTW, the SATA cable (now white) has been replaced 3 times already. Originally it was a red SATA cable when I had just the optical drive there. Then when I added the 250GB HDD, it was the black one. And now that I've swapped out the HDD for the SSD, it's now that white one. I wonder what it will be next :-P.

Why didn't you just leave the original SATA cable there? They all do the same thing.

Because for clean wiring, a 90 degree cable was best. I didn't want to change out the cable for another cable, but since it didn't fit, I really didn't have a choice.

Except the white one isn't 90 degree.....

Right. Which is why it now fits. The 90 degree one was making contact with the optical drive after I installed the SSD. That is the reason why I needed a straight SATA cable instead of a 90 degree one.

Oh I thought you were trying to say you changed it so it would be 90 degrees. I was like...it isn't?
You could have went up two holes behind the drive cage and had the white cable go that way instead. Kinda sticks out now.

Yea it does. Not very happy with the cable sticking out like that now, but it's the only way that really works. And I'd need to get a longer SATA cable for that. The one that's there now barely has any slack as it is.
