How much do one of these go for usually? And how much does the cable company usually charge you for leasing / renting the modem?

A good one like mine costs between 75 and 100. TW charges 7 dollars per month for the wireless hunk of junk.

I'm definitely not liking my TWC modem. While it is convenient that it provides both modem / router capabilities, it's not very good IMO. The internet keeps cutting out - at least the WiFi - which is an issue for me since when that happens it causes the connection to my school's iLab to cut out and I have to reload the program. Sometimes, I forget to save what it is that I'm working on and I have to figure out where I was at before it cut out.

Also - though I"m not sure if this is due to interference or just a crappy WiFi antenna - the signal struggles to get into the bedroom which is just 20 feet over. Now, I think it's likely due to interference because between the modem / router, there are at least 3 large mirrors between the modem / router and the bedroom.

HOLY CRAP! I thought I was the only one?

My internet in middle of games, will drop connection for like 5 secs and reconnects just playing regularly.
I only have the Modem/Phone combo thing, where the internet cable goes from modem to my personal router.

I have had this problem for YEARS.
I just have the one where it allows TWC Cable Internet and Phone. It does not do wifi or anything special its just a modem.

Now, with my problem as I said I will drop connection for 5 seconds and in game waiting like on league of legends ect. will say Reconnecting in middle of screen.

I have since over the years changed my PERSONAL Router about 3 times to see if it was that. Turns out no.

It is either CRAPPY WORN OUT Cables from TWC for their Internet Cables, or its their modems that SUCK.
Period.

I have this problem through my WIFI and straight ethernet into my ROUTER not my TWC Cable Modem.
I have yet to try it with just the Modem its self because That means my whole house is down from internet.

Regardless... TWC If I paid the internet bill here and didn't want to fight with them about it, I would have this issue figured out, and be filing a case against them for horribly managed internet.

Hell It costs 60$ a month on a contract for crappy 30/2 connection while others get the same for like 25$
They don't even provide internet over 5mbps for upload which I would prefer atm.

OH and to Quote this again, I LIVE 10 Blocks away from TWC, and I have these issues.
GOOD GAME!

That's pretty much how it happens to me. Internet connection just flat out drops for about 5 seconds or so.

Ah. Thanks for the help. Here is why I asked:

2 weeks ago got an email from TWC saying, since I was such a great customer, I was getting my Internet speed doubled for free– can’t tell.

Got my bill the other day, it jumped $20, not for Internet, but for the station package that I don’t use much.

We have the “Triple Package” –Phone, Internet, Cable. The only people that call the house phone are telemarketers.

I have 2 OTA’s that pick up over 30 stations, 16 of them are HD. (these are hooked to my HTPC linked to my server).

Called them yesterday to let them know I was bringing in ALL of my stuff, Modem with E-MTA , boxes etc. and would be switching to just Internet. I was told I “can’t” since someone in my house, this past May, signed us up for a yearlong package. I rent the modem for 3.95 a month. Everything else is mine.

Prior to this, I did not pay any attention to the DOCSIS rating of my modem. I am supposed to have 3.0 and the 8 year old modem I am using is 2.0. Can’t get them to change it.

So, I wait.

Their modems just suck period and this was what I was trying to elaborate on in the other thread similar to this.
Pablo just as an FYI, my modem/router is brand new as of September and it is 2.0 as well. They stuff the cheapest JUNK into their plastic and give it to us. I can speak from experience that ATT's Uverse router/modem thing isn't any better. The slightest stress and the damn things CPU usage shoots to 99% and I'm being throttled as it can't handle many connections (like torrents for example or download manager). I bought this modem and was able to use it for 2 weeks before my service was cut off and havn't been able to get it turned back on yet. Was a Godsend though. If you spend the cash on it, flash it to August firmware asap.

I was looking at that one the onther night as well as the Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. Either way, I now have to sit on my hands until the end of May.

I have to have TWC techs come every year because right around May, oddly enough, my HD signal starts to degrade and my RR drops to about 6.5. I have been told by one of the techs that the cable running from the node cuts through 3 yards. He says that's the problem but TWC will not dig it up and replace it.

Funny thing is, the main TWC building sits about a mile from my house. I get to see its massive antenna array EDD.

Why do you have to sit around and deal with ****ty service? Any time I have a problem I take no bones about calling them up. I actually have my installers personal cell number. I only ring him up during business hours on the weekdays, but I still call him up if something is wrong. I absolutely hate how I'm stuck with TWC though. I'm literally 5 minutes away from FiOS service :|
Since I do a lot of 1080p vid I need the upload.

Would love to have FiOS but it does not service my area. I really only have one choice, TWC. There is another carrier but their rates are higher.

Well, I live like a quarter mile away that woulda been better to say.
If we all have the same problem in a sense maybe its their cables in the ground?

Oh btw, theres a guy from TWC About 1 block away from me, LITERITALLY like 25sec walking distance with a truck and everything, and I am getting tempted to get to know him and fix my stuff.

My house is just one of those houses that does not want a company coming in here and drilling crap into my house or anything like that if they have to so we don't want to call them in all honesty but I am ready to say screw it and Me do it for the household.

Also I use the modem "ARRIS TM502G"
Btw My complete package is Cable,Internet,Phone, and as you said "Telemarketers" Mainly.

Fios is in my city, but refuses to come "TO THE CITY" as in they are only in the suburbs. They are not even Downtown City Hall, which is pretty stupid.

Other then Verizon Fios, I have to be stuck with TWC, TWC bought out Adelphia who was AWESOME here, IDK WTF they did but they either destroyed their equipment, or tried changing some stuff around and screwed it all up.

After looking into my Modem since I finally found out the IP Address Im even locked on

Channel Type:Docsis 1.x (TDMA)
Under system it says...
"ARRIS DOCSIS 2.0 / PacketCable 1.0 Touchstone Telephony Modem HW_REV: 02"

So yeah... I am prolly being screwed hard as well I assume...

I believe their system is DOCSIS 2, but their modems are just ****. The 2 weeks I had the new modem were flawless.

Cody_Irwin
12-29-2012, 12:20 AM
Oh btw, I should also mention that when a tree took out our cable line, they didn't even replace it or run it somewhere SAFER a few years back.
They simply stretched it to the MAX, like literitally just bearly made it at all when it woulda been faster and simpler to just replace the cord.

TWC Striving to screw us all out of our money, one customer at a time.

Not to state the obvious, but if it's for just telemarketers why not get rid of it or just not have it hooked up? My best friend has the phone in his package for FiOS and doesn't even have a phone at all for it.

Cody_Irwin

Well its MAINLY telemarketers, but still have family calling ect.
It matters if we make the move to just remove my personal Magic Jack, to my Home phone and redo the number for it.And then get rid of the phone ect.
Like I said its not up to me, I only chip in, I dont pay the majority of everything. It matters when we punch our tv and monitors that we will just be done with TWC.

So instead of homephone our homephone will work off the magic jack instead and turn the magicjack back to my home number.

Its just a way for everyone to still be able to contact someone here for our homephone.

But yeah... When we call TWC sometime hopefully, I will be arguing with them and request a pretty penny since we are paying Full price, not the yearly stuff, since our 1year things been over since the first year they took over Adelphia haha.

I suppose, but I havn't used a home phone since 2004. That is when my relatively poor family got rid of it and I have been straight cell since. Even my 80+ year old grandparents have a cell and broadband lol. Like I mentioned before, my best friend has one with his FiOS package but only because he had to get a certain one so he could use his discount. The stuff he has going on is just crazy though. Idk, I just prefer to download HD shows instead of paying for HD local channels and only pay for internet.

Freaking miss them so much, Quality service, cared for its customers, Amazing support, just the whole package deal with them.
Also Yeah, Cellphones here are more emergency, Thats why I have my own personal Magic Jack as I don't leave the house anyways, someone needs to call me or something thats how to contact me haha.

You're one of a dying breed. You and your home phone that is.

I agree. I would like to throw in a "strange and dying breed" lol.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Magic Jack. I guess it works well for you? I also only carry a cell and actually talk very little on the phone. I'm on a family plan with 3 other people with 700 mins shared and we only go through maybe 100 of it each month hahaha. My primary form of communication is via text.

As for the modem, I also have TWC but I haven't had too much of an issue. I've been meaning to buy my own but haven't done much research plus the one that TWC provided is actually working ok. I also want to switch to FIOs but it seems like too much of a hassle, plus we're on a super cheap tv cable plan that doesn't exist anymore so we're afraid if we do anything different to our account, they might notice and remove that hahaha

lol good ole TWC, i cant stand them but they are the only thing i can get where i live seeing as i'm between big cities in the stick, Its either TWC or DSL and the DSL out here is horrible and run about the same per month. I did get a call from TWC the other day to upgrade from reg internet to turbo, mind you i should already be on turbo cause i called and had them upgrade it 3 months ago. Apprently it needs a new modem according to the person i talked to, so i got basic cable with RR turbo for 54.99 a month which is $8 cheaper then just reg internet. I have no understanding of how something so basic is so damn expensive lol

Probably because they have us by the balls (or chesticles in my case) in terms of choices of what we can choose: dsl, cable or fios.

Did anyone hear about google's 1GB down that was tested in Kansas City and was successful??? I also heard they're going to be providing free internet up to 5mps down. I canNOT wait for them to be an ISP out here in CA.

Charter is cheaper and better than TW but here in DFW you have to be in certain areas to get certain service. For FiOS you have to live in Dallas county and there is no way I'm going to live in Dallas county.

Dallas County is bad. Ft Worth isn't any better (the city) but Tarrant County (right next to Dallas County) where Ft Worth resides has some good areas. For instance where I live is a pretty decent area and I can walk to the store or gas station without fear of being robbed or shot. There is nowhere in Dallas County I would feel safe. Only problem with here is we are stuck with TW or ATT Uverse. Charter is on the west side of Ft Worth and in rich areas north of here. There is FiOS literally 5 minutes down the road from me in Irving which is Dallas County. There is also FiOS in a small area around the Verizon HQ but homes in that area start at 350k. I don't make that kind of money.

Hokerie
01-03-2013, 05:29 PM
I would LOVE to get charter also, but I live in an area where it's TWC only for cable internet... I wonder if charter and TWC have some sort of turf war or something...

PP Mguire
01-03-2013, 06:17 PM
I know for a fact they do here, as ATT and Verizon also do. Tarrant county is ATT, Dallas county is Verizon. TW is in all areas but not in the areas Charter is in.

If I had my own ISP, and some serious capital to back me up, I would offer $1/Mbps. You want 20 Mbps, it will be $20. You want 50 Mbps, $50. That simple. The cost of your Internet speed is one big BOHICa.

Because our country is rather large and over all pretty much all of the land is populated in some form. It just costs way too much to lay copper and fiber for higher speed in internet in real rural areas. As it stands, most people even in the DFW area are limited to cable or DSL.
