I thought it would happen later on in the year, but it looks like Apple was desperate to get the intel based laptops and imacs out the door...they are available now with "intel Core Duo" chips inside (65nm Yonah chips, as far as I remember).

It will be interesting to see how these things sell, since now for the first time you can dual boot Mac OS X and Windows on a Mac! The new laptops actually look intruiging, as they have fairly high end hardware including the ATi X1600 onboard. Anyone planning to get one?

The OEM I work for had been selling Pentium4 PCs around the D915GEV motherboards. This is the same platform used by Apple engineers during their conversion of MacOS X from PowerPC architecture to x86. With the right DVD image of MacOS that is floating around out there, you too can run MacOS on your Pentium4 machine flawlessy, provided you're using the D915GEV motherboard and a Pentium4 processor with a Prescott core or newer.

I'm very interested in OSx, but not in an Apple box. They sure make pretty devices, but I want no part of their proprietary parts and inflated prices. If and only if you can get prod build of OSx for your own hardware would I go for it.

I agree with you Bryan. I would be very interested in installing OSx in on my AMD-based machine. Apple MACs are considered as very good boxes with a lot of features and high performance but they really doesn't fit everone's needs. It fits more the needs of a graphic and web designers and video editors. I personally like the OSx itself, but I would still want to keep playing my games on my PC.
Also, like you've mentioned, the prices of a MAC are pretty inflated.

And yeah, I guess that Apple are pretty desperate and Intel are taking advantage of that. Anyway, I don't care too much, since I'm an AMD fan!!!

I think that the perception of Apple's fitting the needs of graphic designers and such far overrates the Mac platform, as any PC can do the same work as well or better. This is part of the reason why Apple is switching to Intel - Intel CPU's simply outperform the scaled-down Power series (as do AMD's). The Power series was made for use in servers.

I too am interested in the OSX platform, as I have experience with it and believe it to be the best "working" Unix platform. It works great! Microsoft would have some killer competition if Apple would release OSX on a non platform-specific basis.

I saw a commercial promoting Intel chips in Apple computers last night... it was kind of surreal, kinda like a forbidden marriage. Hopefully this will only contribute to some sort of merger somewhere down the road ;)
