Can anyone help me. I have a 712sa DVD/RW but it does not read dvd's I need to send it back to plextor but do not have a recept. It was given to me as a gift and the Date on the drive is Aug 2005 so they won't do anyting unless I have a recept. I would be willing to pay if anyone has one that they can fax to me so i can send the drive back to plextor and get it fixed. Please let me know.

So it sounds like you contacted Plextor already and they said you need a receipt? Can you take back to the place where it was bought from? Ask the person who bought it for where he/she bought it. Asking someone to fax their receipt is a big risk and I doubt anyone will do that. Only thing you can do is try to return or exchange it.

Ya I did contact plextor. I would take it back but my uncle got it online and the site is down where he got it from. Puts me in jam. The cd part works fine it just won't read dvd's sigh. Stupid $120 reader that don't work. I also can't find any local places that sell that reader any more or I would try to take it back to them.

Try updating the firmware and see if that helps. Also you could buy another one and return the one that doesn't read DVDs if updating the firmware doens't work. I know buying another and returning the one that doesn't read DVDs is wrong but there is much you can do since Plextor won't RMA it for you without a receipt and the online store is down.

You could also try a few different types of dvd's... I've gotten a few unused coastered blanks in the packages I've purchased. I would try a few different blank dvd's from different manufacturers, as well as a few retail dvd's.... or perhaps the laser is dirty and needs to be cleaned?
