Since I started using the beta months ago, I haven't looked back to Office, I highly recommend this software. It is definitely worth the cost. Check it out if you have not already.

Industry experts who have taken a look at the OpenOffice.org 2.0 said new database functionality included with the open source personal productivity suite will go a long way toward making the system a viable alternative to Microsoft Office... especially in the all important small and medium sized business market.

OpenOffice 2.0, which was jsut released, includes a new database creation application called Base that is similar to Microsoft Access and rounds out an offering that already includes alternatives to Microsoft's Excel, PowerPoint and Paint applications. Base allows users to create standalone databases and related data entry forms and reports.

"What a great time for another hairball release from Microsoft. Most places have no budget for training or anything else, yet we are all supposed to stop and wonder in amazement at another worthless Office release" -Reader's comment on Microsoft's "Office System 2003".

I use this regularly, the compatibility is good with MS Office on everything except the DB software. It can open access files, but changes seem to require that you start a new database in the OO.o format.

The Open Office 2.0 is just the perfect open source solution.
If you are a developer / technical writer and want to participate and conribute to this great project, you may do so pretty easily.
There is a Developer Article Contest.
The goal of the contest is to generate more developer documentation, and to promote OpenOffice.org to developers at the same time.
Each winner gets $750, so it really makes up for your time.
