what's good about the comparison is that most of newer card does not consume much more power. They all consumes more or less the same amoutn of power under load. This is nice that GFX companies can still bring good performances yet keep the poewr consumption down from last gen.
They *need* to keep an eye on power consumption.
Too much power requires additional cost that delay decisions.
And delays cost money.

in my opinion the cards of today should have the option of getting the extra (beside from the slot) voltage from an outer power supply like one that have on printers or scanners that way the the PSU wont have to be so high voltage.
Asus has a new card with power block.
Dual 7800GT's.
ASUS Extreme N7800GT Dual

thanks it was what i was reffering to this kind of sulotion is better then a very high voltage PSU.
and completely quiet.
It would be cheaper in the long run. Big PSU's cost some big bucks these days. PC Power & Cooling's 1Kw monster weighs in at a hefty price tag.
Hey Scott, you out there? What's the word on the 2Kw psu's? Anytime soon?

the asus's card needs external power because it has dual core on the card itself so in order to power it, it need that extra voltage. It's quite insane how the gfx card is consuming so much power yet the cpu is going in the trend of consuming less and less power. Maybe the gfx industry needs to go back and redesign their cards like intel has done with their cpu:)_.

a small update
it apears that both Nvidia & ATI are using Mobile tech to reduce power

Reduced Performance = Reduced Power Consumption.
Kinda like cars where less horsepower = better fuel economy
Speedsteps is like that too. I hear the following all the time:
"My PC is too slow." - Speedsteps is on.
"My batteries drains too fast." - Speedsteps is off.
Frack! Can't they have both?
Apparently not. At least right now they can't.
