The firm Terumo from Japan claims that artifical blood with artificial red blood cells that it developed won`t carry any bacterias or viruses.
Clinical tests on humanoids will start next year and might fix the worldwide blood shortage.

In 1990 or so, the thought was to use fluorocarbons as the basis for artificial blood. Remember the movie "The Abysis" and the high pressure suit where the diver had to breath the liquid? Same idea.
