View Full Version : Bon Voyage my Creative Blaster 3D PCI Powered Friend!
A couple of weeks ago I gave my boss's son my Creative Blaster 3D PCI video card. It was a sad farewell.
Though many years ago, it seems as though it was just yesterday that I fired you up and you responded by immersing me in 3D glory.
A tear shed the day that I carted off my last pci motherboard to the big scrap heap in the sky and had to put you in your retail box and shut you in the closet.
But now you are free.
I know.
If you love something, set it free.
Free to be, Creative Blaster 3D

I couldnīt do it, I love my pieces of hardware that made my PC more special.
My favourite hardware is my old trusty Voodoo 3. That card inmersed me into 3D game with a speed and quality never seen.
I would never sell or give it. I canīt.
Anyway, it still works in my old pII

Hmm.. I'm sitting here stunned that you used the terms speed and quality to describe the voodoo3....

I was stunned the first time I cranked up my original Voodoo 1 card in all its 8MB 3Dfx 3D only glory.
What a sight!

That I can understand because there was nothing else like it at the time. By Voodoo3 time Nvidia was destroying them with image quality and speed. Poor Voodoo3 was stuck in 16 bit color and 256x256 texture size limit.

Yep, but when I had that card, I didnīt know anything about graphics cards and I had, before the purchasing of the voodoo3, a S3 Trio 3D which barely could run something in 3D mode, it was incredibly slow. Voodoo 3 was the card which introduced me into the 3D gaming and it was faster than TNT, faster in some games (because of the glide API) than TNT2 (not the Ultra version) but itīs true that didnīt have the quality that TNT2 had. Voodoo3 lasted me 3 years and I could run GTA 3 with that card, with the AthlonXP 2000+ in my system, although sometimes it hanged up because of the lack of texture memory. Even I tried to play UT2003 and it ran flawessly in OpenGL mode with the miniGL driver.
So for me, it was fast and with good quality (coming from a S3 card).

I guess in the end that's all that matters.
When I had a Voodo3, I didn't know to much about graphic card, let alone Nvidia's existence.
So, I remember the moment I had it in my hands after paying the guy at the store, I was the happiest guy in the world...
As time passed, I understood that wasn't really the top I could get at the time.
I still have my Matrox Mellinium 2, 4Mb with the daughter board adding another 4Mb of video ram, and My Creative Labs 8M Voodoo 2 SLI setup.
I won't let them go.
I should build a retro gaming rig and throw a lan party. lol.

Ha! I guess I'm also a Voodoo 3 fan from the last century. It certainly seemed good at the time.
I've still got two working PCs with Voodoo 3's in them. My kids play "Freespace" and some other games on them.
achhh, the good (not so) old days, when 3D graphics was not a given thing but really striking news...
Innovation!
I guess I'll always remember that Voodoo3 card of mine as the one that marked my 3D gaming starting point ;)
Cheers!
