Gmail Chat will let you send instant messages from your e-mail account.

Gmail Chat is available on Internet Explorer 6.0 and higher and Firefox 1.0 and higher and in the U.S. English interface only

* note that if you want voice chats, you'll have to download the Google Talk client application.
