Hanners posted up about it at EB (http://69.93.88.162/#news13739) and they're talking about it on Beyond3D, so since it ain't up here yet I thought I'd toss it up.

You can check out the slides themselves over at TechPowerUp (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/X1900LaunchAnalysis).

Basically they're pointing out all the advantages of the GTX 512Mb over the 1900, but I always sort of hate PR crap like this from either side.

This graphics war sucks, they are always claiming that they are the best and they are always trying to show that the other company is worse.
Both companies, with every new release of a technology or a new card, they release those slides. That kind of information leaked only shows the fear of both companies for the possible losses because of the new things that appear.
IMHO itīs ridiculous

What bugs me about it, (stuff like this from both sides, I'm not being IHV specific), is that it's awfully insulting to the crowds it is targetted at. :?

I mean who except enthusiasts reads the leaked slides, yet the vast majority feel they're bull**** and just FUD.

It just seems counter productive.

The thing is that there are a lot of people who read those slides and they believe them because, maybe, they donīt know anything about graphics or hardware and simply they believe them, so the graphics company that release them get what they wanted to. Itīs sad indeed.

Anyway, techpowerup could explain that those slides are not true at all.

Actually most of the info in the slides are true, it's the way it's presented and the conclusions they draw from it that are a bit "tentative". ;)

You can make the GTX or XTX win a game benchmark depending on the custom time demo you use for the most part, and the set-up the cards are run on. They just cherry picked some stats to make the point they wanted.

That's what I don't like about it.

I totally agree with you digi. Those presentations should stay internal. We don't need to see them (especially the more ignorant people who think they know **** when they don't).

It's like setting out to prove something and then having a study to prove that rather than having a study and seeing what it proves. Statistics can be used to say anything. Perception is too easily manipulated with a graph and chart.

We have the same problems in medical research, where, depending on what animal model, what experimental design, and, most importatly, what statistical method you use, you can any data say just about anything.

Of course, the scientifically literate will see the signs, but most people won't. I don't want to bring up any politically touchy subjects, but I'm sure that we all know of a few hot-button pseudosciences that have significant support in the general populace because of number-twisting and ignorance.

I wasn't aware that it was so easy to do that with electronics though. In my experience, most testing agencies use the same games and programs to test systems. I guess that it's telling that these slides aren't using the more common benchmarks, like Doom 3, etc.

The thing is I can find reviews from other sites where they compare the same cards in the same games where ATI clearly wins the benchmarks. It depends on what review site you are looking at. Nvidia just picked the benchmarks where they look better.

What everyone has to realize is that these slides are a marketing tool used to teach their salesforce how to answer questions and point out weaknesses in their competitors product when they try to sell their chips to OEMs. Any time a company comes out with a hot new product their competitor has to educate its sales force about how to counteract that product in the marketplace.

If you've ever done any shopping you'll know that sales people give you half-truths and partial information to shine a good light on the product they are trying to peddle. You would think the people making the purchasing decisions for the OEMs are highly educated about hardware but unfortunately they are just purchasing people at a tech company that are looking for a good deal to make their company money.

I think what needs to happen is both companies need to keep a better lid on their 'secret' slide presentations.

Well this puts in more oil int he fire for fanboys.
I mean on both sides ATI AND Nvidia.
I mean let`s say I would be trippin on Nvidia then by watching this I could diss my little friends saying LOOK AT HOW YOUR CARD SUCKS COMPARED TO MINE.
I know its not all about that but the whole video card war is really getting old.
And I agree with all the other points that have been brought up already.
