I guess this will be in direct competition with ATi's 1600 (which from most reviews are a decent card but lack the power packed in the nvidia's similar price range card).

yes it has 128Bit bus so it should be the 1600 compattion

I think it will end faster than x1600, as they have to release a card that have to compete with the soon to come x1700. Usually, new midrange of Nvidia cards end about 30% faster than the last midrange card or even match the last generation mid to high-end cards

this is still not known
there ae some midrange cards that are great compred to high end some are not .
Look at the case of 6600GT .
