I know it is a long post, but I hope you will see another gaming world when you finish the last line...

You've probably noticed that we are always speaking about big titles and sequels that are on the stores shelves (or soon will be).
Those titles sell thousands of copies within a short period of time.
Each of these may be advanced and graphically good looking, but sometimes, repulsively commercialized and it is getting a bit tiring playing the same story, with no innovative gameplay whatsoever.
The worst part is we, gamers, have to pay a lot of money for each one of these…

If you feel the same way as I do, I have news for you, there is a huge, amazing, innovative and FREE world to explore!
So, sometimes, late at night, when everyone's asleep (including my wife and daughter), I find myself putting those big names aside for a moment, activate my dimension sphere and walk over to the other side of PC gaming.

A world where creativity and innovation are key players.
A world full of danger and adventure.
A world that I like to call, The Alternative Gamer World, Muhahahahahahah

Exciting Adventures
The adventure genre may be dieing when looking from the commercialized games point of view.
But behind closed doors, on the net, this business is quiet blooming!
If you do a little search, you'll be able to find remakes for classic games such as King Quest 1: Quest for the Crown and Maniac Mansion Deluxe that takes up back in time to experience these classics, but with better graphics and a new gameplay.
If you want something new, you better try the brilliant flash adventure Brain Hotel.
You play the role of Ed Arnold, a hapless deliveryman who gets tangled in the annual supervillain convention at the Brain Hotel. Ed reluctantly becomes involved in a plot to defeat one of the more ruthless supervillains at the convention.

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/5593/27pc.png
Brain Hotel (http://www.otterarchives.com/brainhotel/)

If, after the cancellations of Full Throttle 2 and Sam & Max 2, you miss the LucasArts adventures style, you MUST try Apprentice and Apprentice 2: The Knight’s Move.

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/8088/11js1.png
Apprentice (http://herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com/app1.html#top)

Also, Adventure Game Studio (AGS for short) allows you to create your own point-and-click adventure games.
Here you'll find a whole lot of adventures, home made by fans and you may create your own one and share with the world, cool!
AVG (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/)

Text Games
No need to panic, Text Games do not bite (usually)!
These games have no ehhh, well, hmmm, they require us to actually to hmmmm ..... READ! there, I said it, I feel great!
Well, ok, I'll continue... ;)
Some of the most deep and amazing games in PC gaming history are text based.
Such games can be so much better than graphical ones in so many aspects. Text is a better way to describe feelings and relationships.
They activate our imaginations and creativity, just like a good book.
Text games present us with moral conflicts, hard decisions and amazing storyline.
Take Andrew Plotkin's amazing Spider and Web.
A futuristic spy story with a highly unusual structure. The bulk of the game consists of flashbacks, as you try to recreate, to the satisfaction of the man interrogating you, the events leading up to your capture. The strangest thing about this is that the protagonist knows more about what's happened than the player does.
A must, get it here:
Spider and Web (http://www.wurb.com/if/game/207)

If you liked it, try Andrew Plotkin's others as well:
Shade and So Far , which will strike you with perfect story and make you think...

If you feel like laughing a little, try these:
Pick up the Phone Booth and Die, a very nice parody for those who played a little Text Adventires.
Pick up the Phone Booth and Die (http://www.spatch.net/games/index.shtml)

Quake IT - a textual version for Quake, made especially for the first of April.

All you have to do is put on your glasses and download this small
program (http://mirror.ifarchive.org/if-archive/infocom/interpreters/frotz/WindowsFrotz2002.zip) and enjoy!

Free OnlineGames
massively multiplayer online role-playing (MMORPG) are a rising star in the gaming industry's sky. Although not as good looking and fun, you still may find some good, long lasting MMORPG games for free.
Take Runescape for example, a fantasy game that had above 70,000 users.

runescape (http://www.runescape.com/)

Crossfire is another good example for this
Destroy hundreds of monsters on huge bloody maps...
Look here:
Crossfire (http://crossfire.real-time.com/)

The main thing, do not be afraid to try
The magic about The Alternative Gamer is that he has no limits.
The alternative gamer is not afraid of exploring new worlds, trying new things that he won't find in regular shelf games.
Trying the bizarre, odd, weird side of the game world.
Going to places where no gamer has been before...
This article has just a few references to some games, but the selection is just endless!!!
You may try other games, arcades, RPG chat rooms, long E-mail games, simple physics games etc.

I love the big names, the graphics and the noise, but sometimes, I like to switch to this alternate reality where the sky is the limit and I just have to choose the world I want to explore!

--Suggested by zachig:
The Breakdown
You're playing the pointy haired main character, and your objective is to get to your home town and cash the winning lottery ticket in time.
The game was developed with AGAST (Adventure Game Authoring System) made by Russell Bailey and Todd Zankich.

Check it out here (http://thebreakdown.adventuredevelopers.com/)

Thingavore
Thingavore is 2D, side-scrolling problem solving game. You play the role of the adorable and quirky "Thingavore" who overcomes obstacles by, as its name implies, using and most especially eating different objects. You must navigate through each level which is filled with destructible terrain, water, hazards, doors, buttons, and many different items to help you along the way.

Here's the website of the game, where you can download it:

It's more of a game for younger teens, but I found Maplestory pretty addictive. It's a free MMORPG, it'd 2D sde-scrolling, and the visuals are anime-like.

First, I am glad you find the info I collected useful ;)

Thanks, I really forgot about that one, although, I never pretended to include all the games in this article since, well, you know... :D

Everybody, feel free to add to this thread any free game out there from any genre, give us a little description about it and we'll check it out with pleasure.

Well pym this is awesome.
Like i posted in the forum games... some good AGS games you an try that i recomand a LOT.
There`s
Cirque de Zale
5 Days a stranger and the sequel 7 days a skeptic.
If you guys are interested i`ll let you know a little more just ask me.
That is if you are interested but I tell you these titles have marked me and whne i think of the times i played those games it brings some nostalgia...
Maybe cause i played those games when i met my girlfriend :p

pym
02-12-2006, 07:27 PM
Well, thank you guys for your support ;)

Are all these games made by AGS?
Can you tell us some of your impressions from these games, besides what we can see on the AGS site?

Thanks!

Schwarz

Well cirque de zale.
Seriously I rarely have seen an adventure game with such humour.
It is not misplaced humour it is just plain funny and sarcastic.
You play as Alexander who is a crap shover in a circus.
After playing a nasty trick on your boss a magician he sents you in another dimension.
The games starts out where the king wants you to save the princess but this is not another save the princess defeat the dragon kinda game no not at all actually your character doesn`t care much about that he wants to start his own circus in this new dimension.
I wont say much more cause I want you guys to try it.
A very fresh and innovative adventure game that I reccomand to anyone the only downside and it can be a upside for those who dont have much time is that the game is short.
I will post some more about the other 2 titles I have posted but hehe My girfriend is ready to go so I must leave... :p

(EDIT) Yes they are AGS games

Schwarz, thanks for your games recommendation.
I've heard about 5 Days a stranger and the sequel 7 days a skeptic, but never played them, I'll try them as soon as I get some spare time.
About Cirque de Zale, never heard of it until your question in the Forum Game...

Schwarz
02-13-2006, 08:38 PM
Well if you like simple humour pym the one I recomand the most is Cirque de zale try it you'll like it most likely i'm sure.

5 Days a stranger.
Well you start out as Trilby a cat burglar who is trying to steal a rich mansion.
After getting in the mansion Trilby realises the safe is empty and that he is stuck inside the house...
it seems as though some supernatural force has trapped him and some other people inside the house.
If you like mystery this game is for you.
Somehow every once in a while someone in the house gets killed.
Then comes the distrust in everyone's mind blamming each other.
Its an awesome game but once again another short one.

pym
02-13-2006, 09:03 PM
Well, Schwarz, I like simple humor (somebody said Monkey Island?) and I sure like some mystery as well.
Your 5 Days a stranger's description just sounds perfect, I'll sure check it out, maybe even right now...

Thanks!

Hey I just beat the apprentice...
This was shorter then all the other AGS i played but the music was EXCELLENT, voice acting also plus the game is fun.
A little twist of event at the end :p for thsoe who played it.
Some puzzles are well thought but hard to think of but all in all the game is not all that hard.
I am downloading the sequel now.
The knights move.
We will see if its as good or even better !
There are actually 3 in the series wich the third one named Chackmate supposed to be released in 2005, but as far as I know it has not been completed yet sadly :(

pym
02-13-2006, 10:00 PM
Yup, it's indeed short, but brilliant, isn't it?
You'll enjoy the sequel as well, I am sure!

Schwarz
02-14-2006, 04:19 PM
I will probably enjoy it a lot !
The only problem is these days i dont have much time anymore.
GF school and all coming back.
I'll still benchmark the card I won to make a little review on it even though its already been made.

Hey btw have you ever played diskworld on PSX pym??
Not sure if they came out on another platform but these were awesome.

pym
02-14-2006, 05:39 PM
Congrats on your new card!
Do you feel a performance boost with your 6800GS while playing The Apprentice?

:D

Schwarz
02-14-2006, 07:30 PM
Hehe lol
Well i haven't received it yet.
I should have it today or tomorow I dunno...
Just hope its gonna be soon !
I'll go check with fedex where it is now.

pym

Schwarz, be sure to update us when you get your new XFX card and add some impressions while you're at it.
I understood it is the XXX edition, so Bjorn3d and XFX really spoiled you and zachig ;)

Schwarz
02-17-2006, 09:28 AM
Hey check out the front page news :p the review has been made !

Anyways i just beat the the apprentice 2.
I actually liked the sequel a lot better usualy its all the way around.
The 2nd one was more complete.
But I have to admit i cheated once and used a walkthrough.
When you get the T-shirt at the camp I was sure (and was right)
I had to give it to loyd (i beleive that was his name) the shirtless guy guarding the mansion.
For some reason it wouldn't give it to him even in the walkthrough it said to give it to the guy.
I thought my game was messed up but I guess I had to talk to EVERYONE to unlock this or something...
Anyways these games are awesome.
Actually better then a lot of crap we see on the shelves today.

pym
02-17-2006, 01:49 PM
That's exactly what I was trying to say in this article I wrote.
The shelves are full with crap these days (although there are some awsome titles as well) and the alternative (and free) games are just great.
I wanted to thank Schwarz for recommenading 5 days a Stranger, I just finished it and it was perfect, loved it!
Now I'll go for 7 days a skeptic...

Only problem was my 6600GT is too weak for these games, 640X480 + filters and all...
The game was just too heavy for my system.
If I could just get a 7800GT, that would be just perfect ;)

Again, everybody, feel free to add to this thread any free game out there from any genre, give us a little description about it and we'll check it out with pleasure.

Ok, I have found another very nice and free text game for ya all to experience
It is called Omerta.

Omerta is a text-based massive multiplayer RPG game, based on the stories about the legendary don Barafranca.

Set in the 1930's gangster and mafia world, the game is all about status, money and respect. Players get rank points by doing crimes, stealing cars and busting friends out of jail. You can even run you're own organised crime ring, robbing local banks and holding up cars on quiet roads. As you delve deeper into the dark gangster world, many players find other business opportunities, such as gambling clubs, reselling booze and even drug dealing.

New game players choose to start in a city of either USA or Italy, where the mafia has got a large influence even now. One of the more gambling cities, Las Vegas, allows gangsters to try their luck with a wide range of slot machines, black-jack games, and even roulette tables.

In a deadly and sometimes cruel world it helps to have allies, both for protection and shared wealth. Many game players have set up families, who will look out for eachother until the very end. Families are rich, powerful and can run whole neighbourhoods of a city, so you may want to keep on their good side. As you would imagine, they aren't too happy if another player or rival family shoots one of their guys or takes one of their casinos.

For those more cautious game players there are other forms of protection, bodyguards, fast getaway vehicles and even bulletproof suits.

Take a look at it here (http://www.barafranca.com/game-mafia-story.php)

Great work, pym! I played Runescape for a long time myself and liked it at the beginning but later it gets boring, when you have all quests done and only have to work to get new level in skills. I was a free user, not members, members have more things to do in runescape - more quests, more places to visit, more levels.

It's more of a game for younger teens, but I found Maplestory pretty addictive. www.mapleglobal.com it's a free MMORPG, it'd 2D sde-scrolling, and the visuals are anime-like.

It's not my favourite game, but it got me through the months when I didn't have enough HD space for any other computer game :P

lol...I was trying to avoid using the c-word...but I guess it's unavoidable :P I guess the one thing that I love/hate about it is that you can't really attack any of the other players...works well when u're new and weak and don't wanna be picked on by stronger players...but when u get stronger and other characters get on your nerves, it'd be nice to just let'em taste steel lol

pym
03-31-2006, 05:59 AM
Well, you have to use the c-word since nothing else in the English vocabulary can describe the game's graphics better ;)
Nothing wrong with it, though, I love the cute graphics... :D

I enjoyed Space Quest, back in the day :) It was made by Sierra, and was along similar lines of King's Quest. It was sci-fi with a healthy dose of humour  The lead character's name was Roger Wilco :) If you liked King's Quest, I highly recommend you track down a copy of Space Quest. I believe the series went up to a fifth game...
