7900 GTX works at 650 MHz

Nvidia can not get it up

NVIDIA'S flagship G71 won't be able to get to the speeds the firm wanted it to. We reported before that Nvidia needs at least 700MHz to beat ATI's R580 based X1900 XTX. However, according to our sources, the G71 will be nothing more than a 90 nanometre G70 die shrink. It won't have more than 24 pipelines but you never know what Nvidia has exactly up its sleeves.

It will use GDDR 3 memory running at 800MHz, with a 1600 MHz memory clock. In the case it ends up with 24 pipes it won't be enough to touch the R580, Radeon X1900 XTX performance crown. If Nvidia did put 32 pipes in G71 chip this would make its chip as a much better competitor and will make ATI run hard for its crown. We think that Nvidia could win most of the benchmarks with 32 pipes.

Nvidia plans to price its Geforce 7900 GTX very aggressively. That’s what you do if you cannot beat your competitor on the performance side. This card should cost $499 only and even the price indicates that the card won't be able to get the performance crown back. Last time Nvidia had a great card that managed to win all the benchmarks it priced its card at a saucy $650 and sold every single piece.

The cards should be sampled by the end of the month or at CeBIT. Nvidia will invite its loyal press, to Satan Clara to show them its new part. There will also be lower clocked G70 90 nanometre parts branded as Geforce 7800 GT and priced even less. Nvidia also plans to attack X1600 generation with its new 7600 GT, GS cards all scheduled for Cebit launch.

Remember, if G71 has 24 pipelines so does Sony Playstation 3. We will still sniff about it as some things are still unclear and G71 is more important to Nvidia that you can imagine. As long as it can ship millions of these chips at 550 MHz, a speed desired by Sony, Nvidia is fine.

very interesting.
is that mean that ATI is the winner in that round?
Nvidia is really doing very starnge to intruduce a weaker card then ATI at CeBit?

infront of the whole world?

i think that we should wait and see if it is really that or Nvidia is planing something big

They may have no choice than to release the new card................
Same as ATI had to do with the X1800 series, sometimes things just work out that way.
It's better to release a weaker card than no card at all.
Sort of sounds like Nvidia is having yeild problems like ATI had a while back. And if they were to release the 32 pipe version and are having yeild problems, you'll end up ard pressed to find one for sale on the retail market and Nvidia doesn't need that. Look how bad it hurt ATI with the X850 cards........

I sympathize with any fanboy on either side...

This is going to cause quite a stirr.. with nVidia fans calling foul and ATi fans laughing out loud. (If it's true).

Always sad to see this sort of behaviour. But then again competition is always better for the consumer. This may force ATi to price down there X1900 line.. not bad if you ask me.

Yeah I just read that over at the INQ. It will be interesting to see whats happening with it. Bjorn3D will be getting briefed soon so when NDA is up I will spill the beans.

It's going to be very very interesting to see what all comes out of all this, if anything at all..............

Well the 7900GTX will meet and perhaps exceed the 1900XTX in performance. But this will change drastically in 2-3 months time as the newer games come out and the 1900XTX pushes ahead of the 7900GTX.

I am not saying this as a fanboy but rather as an objective observation based on the current information available about both architectures. Of Course I could be wrong.. but if this information is true.. I'm not that wrong at all.

Kind of cool when you have a 50/50 chance of being right!!

I think maybe the whole 7xxx has sort of reach the limits. It's time that nvidia goes back and design a new achitecture for the new card (mayb the 8 series). Current 7x/6x has brought good profit for nvidia, but I guess compare to the new ATI it shows a little bit of age already.

Any hardware company wants to maximize profits therefore they will milk the Geforce6/7 architecture for as long as they can. Of course they're already working on the next gen GPU which will probably resemble the RSX (PS3 part).

Good to know but I won't say anything until I see some benches against the XTX. I heard taht the GTX and GT would have 32 and 24 pipes.

I've heard that Nvidia is have yeild problems, thus the redused pipes in the new GPU. But as you all should know, no one will really know till the cards and info are offically released.

Where did you hear that o.O? This is a really big disappointment to me as I am getting a new computer soon and want to get all the high end parts that I can..

Where's your yeilder now, see? Maybe we need a new yeilder.

A new and improved yeilder. A yeilder that will watch over us...

and dazzle us with smoke and mirrors at the appropriate time.

That's what I'm talkin' about! Bring on the yeild!

This seems interesting, Nvidia has now problems so they make the witty decision, a low price for a card that canīt beat the nowadays performance king. Itīs good for all of us who will see the prices falling, as ATI surely will fall its prices. Also, that makes a 7600GT card cheaper because Nvidia will want to earn the lost money in other areas. Also, maybe the 7600GT will cost like the x1600 series as they want it to compete against them. Thatīs good for the consumer as the prices were growing too high

BTW.. there's an x1900XL and x1800GTO on the way.. ;)
