First of all I would like to congratulate both Bjorn3D and XFX for the new "XFX Support Forum". It good to know that we, XFX users, can get a support and someone to listen and give good advice  .

Anyway, here's my question. I recently won the XFX 6800GS PCI-E in January Contest. This is a WONDERFUL card, but I'm a little bit worried that I'll have some problems running it.

I'm currently using my XFX 6600GT AGP. The reason I can't use (yet) my new card is because it supports PCI-E. I'm planning to upgrade soon to a new board that supports PCI-E but I'm afraid that my current Thermaltake PurePower PSU won't have enough Power/Ampers to drive my Video Card.

The PSU has 480W Purepower (550W Peak) and has a SINGLE +12V rail of 18A ONLY. That's why I'm worried. :?

Can someone tell me if 18A will be enough for my new XFX 6800GS PCI-E (I'm gonna use a X2 3800+ CPU along with it, so you might take this into consideration).

Any advice will be really appreciated :) . THX.

Ok I was going to send this one over to them since they do not have a tech assigned here yet. But I went and checked the NVIDIA reviewers guide for the card and you should be fine. They recommend a min of a 350Watt for the card in single configuration use and not SLI.

Your power supply would not cut it in SLI but single card should be fine.

Are you shure abuot that, Scott? And what if I use also a X2 3800+? Did you take that into considration as well? I'm just afraid that 480W won't be enough for running both the 6800GS and X2 3800+ (not mentioning overclocking it).

Anyway, thanks for your answer. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Than I'll know for sure  .

I think you shouldn't be worried so much zachig. I am not really positive on this but I don't think the CPU takes off the 12V rail. Try this as it can give you an idea sort of.

Now you've clamed me down man. According to this "Extreme PSU Calculator", my planned system will consume less than 420W :) .

I hope this one is accurate. Anyway, I'm still not sure whether my 18A on the PSU will hold the 6800GS. :?

I have sent the link over to my XFX PR guy who is setting up the tech stuff for the forum to look over. Since you already have the power supply all you have to do is try it. If the machine reboots alot or just shuts of then the power supply will not be big enough. But looking at the Reviewers Guide straight from NVIDIA you look to be fine.

you should be fine as I had an antec truepower 380w that has also 18v when I run it with amd64 3200, 6800 Ultra. However, the antec that I had has independent 12v rail, so it's more stable. But I personally think as long as you don't overload with too powerful cpu and lots of peripherals, expansion cards, HD, then you should be fine.

Worst case is that you'll have to hold your OC down a little till you get a new one.................. That is if you need a new one at all.

Thanks for your advice, Schwarz. I'll be using a different CPU (X2 3800+) which consumes a little bit more Watts (~85W) and I'll probably use my Thermaltake Purepower 480W. So, hopefully I'll be OK.

Thanks again.

Hey no problem zach.
If I can help in any way i don't mind doing it !

You can always help by donating me a new OCZ PowerStream 520W PSU

I could do that lol but could you donate a X-fi Fatality sound card and a new AM2 with some DDR2 ??

I would like to update you guys that there is a BIG chance that I'll buy a used OCZ Modstream 520W to replace my Thermaltake Purepower 480W. :D
I found one guy that is willing to sell his X2 3800+ (stepping E4) along with his OCZ Modtream 520W PSU for $265 ($65 for the PSU and $200 for the CPU).
The PSU was already used for 4 monthes but still has warranty for additional 32 monthes, while the CPU is almost brand new since it was used for only 2 monthes and has warranty for additional 34 monthes!!!
I think this is a really good deal for me. I just hope that this guy won't regret on the last minute, as I'm gonna buy it from him in about 3 days :? .
As I read in some reviews, the OCZ Modstream 520W has "only" single +12V rail, but with 28A (instead of "poor" 18A on my TT).
So, hopefully, if everything will go smooth, I'll have in a few days a "new" CPU and PSU.

I'll be happy to hear your opinion/advice/thoughts... :)

265 seems like a good deal for the cpu and psu. Now does the cpu comes with hsf? if it doesn't then you would have to spend like 30-40 for the hsf. OCZ should be good enough for the single card, but if you plan to run SLI, then you would want to get a psu that has 35amp or so on the 12v.

zachig

Thanks for your advice, PUTALE. :D
The CPU DOES come with a HSF, but the "stock" one.
But, no worries, I already have (sitting lonely, waiting for a CPU :( ) a nice CoolerMaster Hyper6+ Air Cooler.

Oh, and currently, I don't plan going for SLI, and also if I do, I can't really afford a new PSU, with 35A (or more) on the +12V rail, as it'll surely be much more expensive from the one I'm offered here.

Thanks.

No putale its a min of 32A for sli, lmao but nice deal Zachig, hope you enjoy it:)

yeah, I know it's 32amp but I usually recommend a tad more just ot be safe, you don't know the maker of the PSU as some would not perform as good as others, hence I usually just round the number a bit higher. zachig, looks liek you will have an awesome setup (man I envy you so much:().

Hi guys!!!

I'm happy to tell you that I just bought the OCZ ModStream 520W and X2 3800+ from that guy I was telling you about in my previous posts. :D

The paid for the whole deal (PSU + X2 3800) a total of US$260.

Like I said, both the PSU and CPU are used but still has a lot of warranty period.
The PSU has 32 monthes of warranty left, while the CPU has 34 monthes!!!

I'm just waiting now to buy (or win... ) a new PC case and then, I'll install my brand new system :D (I'm thinking on buyng the Thermaltake Soprano. I first thought about the Gigabyte Aurora, but it is too expensive for me :( ).

Anyway, here are some pictures. Feel free to tell me what you think.

awesome setup, you can actually start build the system by taking out your old system and use that case if I were you. I dont' think that i can wait to build a new system if I have all my parts:). Now zachig, care to ship you old "junk" to me:).

Yeah, I guess you're right. All my friends and colleagues to work are telling me to use my old case, but I have the patience needed and I still prefer a few days more and purchase the "Thermaltake Soprano" and then install it all. :D

So...my new system will include:
- AMD X2 3800+ CPU (Manchester Core, E4 Stepping, CDBHE 0535SPMW)
- CoolerMaster Hyper 6+ CPU Cooler
- EVGA NF4 PCI-E SLI Motherboard
- OCZ Gold 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 2-2-2-5
- XFX 6800GS PCI-E XxX Edition (which I've won here in Bjorn3D :D ).
- OCZ ModStream 520W PSU
- Thermaltake Soprano Case

:D :D :D :D :D

Good news zachig all that is left is too see what you can get out of the EVGA board for OC'ing and some benches.
