I was told about a brilliant Web site today - Pandora.com. It's a project that attempts to map the elements of a song and apply them to other songs, seeking matches. Love a song and want to hear others like it? Love a band and want something similar? Pandora attempts to provide that service. It's free, too.

I plugged in The Pixies, one of my favorite bands, and it provided their description of the band's overall sound. It sounded pretty accurate, so I let it select songs. I was amazed at the similarities in sound between bands. Even more, most of the bands I'd never heard of so it gives me many, many music avenues to explore that I never knew existed. Too cool! 8)

A friend told me about that site a couple months ago and like Bryan said it's really useful in exploring artists who you may not have heard of before but have a sound that you like.

One thing though, it doesn't let you select a specific song....so if you wanna find a song simiilar to "song X" by artist Y, it'll play a bunch of songs that sound like song X, and a few other songs by artist Y, but it'll take a while before it actually plays that particular song.
