hi there
, im new in here and here is my issue :
- so i turned on my pc , it started until the login screen and nothing it didnt show that screen when its supossed to be shown.
- i dealed with a quiet similar issue a bench of time! (the pc strat with the video that disapear at the login "the screen says no video")
i had only to reset the pc, and voila its start normaly without any prblm beside it never ever crashed on me !
- today it freezed ! (dint happen BEFORE) (no video) but i m sure that it freezed rather than waiting for me to input my password !
- i reset it (knowing that is not usual) .... it didnt even start !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- i reset it couple of time
- it finaly started BUT WITHOUT VIDEO ! , and actulay it didnt freeze at all, to goes til the login screen!
(the bios beep, 2 times as usual, 1 when i turn it on and 2 after it show that nvidea gpu bios. i can hear the hdd loading the windows, and stops at the login screen)
i reset it again ! nothing no video and crap not even the bios (sytem was cmpltly dead).
i reset again and again, smtimes i noticed that it start with video but it freeze at that nvidia bios screen. (u know 6800 pci-x bios 53.0.0.1 bla bla bla)
my mobo has both slot agp and pci, i pluged in an agp gpu, it didnt want to start til i took out the pci-gpu.
with the agp card, it run smooth as usual ! with the video
with the pci card, it run sm time without the video and smtimes the sysytme is completly dead !
comon ! dont tell me i just saved sm money to buy me and a second hdd and now it feels like i have to get a new gpu :-'(
GPU : 6800GS xfx 256mb.

maybe it could help !
1. What card are you upgrading from and is it PCI-e or AGP?
didnt do any upgared system was cool with the xfx 6800gs pci-x, never ever crashed even during tuff gaming, never freezed or anything, system was runing fine the day before.
2. What is your new card you are trying to make work and is it PCI-e or AGP?
i had since i built it like 3 month ago same gpu : 6800gs pci-x
3. What are the specs of your system (PSU with amps and watts, CPU, Mobo, RAM, case cooling )
- psu : 450w, ggu need's 2 power connector,
- cpu : amd 64 3500
- mobo : ecs K8t890-A (via chipset)
- ram : g.skil value series 2GB (2 x 1GB)
- case : cheap case, cooling fair enough
i swith that pci-x gpu with agp, the pc ran smooth like a charm !
4 - My best bet is that you have to properly select you display as AGP or PCI in BIOS.
well i went ahead to check that out it was set to pci-x ! will runng under the agp gpu. it's quiet wierd!
also i was thinking it maybe the mobo that lost it , who knows :-/ or may be the psu , see my psu is 20pin , and the mobo is 24pin , system was runing fine til today
onemore thing wil trying the system run ONLY once with the pci card , i turn it off then nothing ! at least 3 hour testing that thing ! :-/

have you update the bios? what about the chipset drivers (I think via just released a new hyperion few weeks back).
now you have a 450w psu, can you give more specs on that, what brand whats the amp ont eh 12v? It's possible that your psu is not strong enough to support the 6800 card and that's why you experience the problem when you switch to pcie but not agp (I am assuming your agp is much older than 6800 and need less power).

that all i can post about power sply i googled the model my knowldege about the PSU is verry limited :)
--> Power Supply Features:
- Model: LP-9960B
- 450-watt power
- 115v-230v manual switch
--> Power Supply Input:
- 115-230V @50/60Hz,10A/6A
--> Power Supply Output:
- +3.3V/26A
- +5V/35A
- +12V/15A
- -5V/0.5A
- -12V/0.8A
- +5Vsb/2A
recent test :
verry important : (i noticed)
- with the pci-x gpu (xfx6800gs) the system actualy BOOT, but without the video ! if so the system is smooth i can hearthe hdd loadind the windows til the login screen ! (no video ofcorse)
- but when the video is UP, the system FREEEZE! randomly during the bios screen before windows could start. , rarely it goes up to windows logo ! but still it freeze ... before the login screen.
so when
video is up sytem freeze (mostley during bios screen)
no video system works just fine ! but i cant see nothing :-D
- i went ahead and i put 1 more PSU (system under a dual PSU) , it booted a couple of time and it freeze randomly before windows start. (during the bios screen).
- i updated the mobo's bios and no luck !
- system can boot with both gpu, but only the agp works.
- in this case windows doesnt seam to detect the pci-x gpu.
via driver k8t890-a wont help i cant use the system with that pci-x ...
the agp card is a MSI - Gforce4 Ti4800 SE. doesnt need extra power form the PSU. but that 6800gs abuse the psu with 2 connector :-/

Just as a quick guess, I'd say that it is a problem with the PSU as you sad that you're tunning a 20 pin in a 24 pin socket. This may cause the PCI-e bus not to be getting the power that it needs all the time (random freezing and no video). If you can fine a 24 pin PSU to try out to see if it solves the problem before you go out and buy one would be best. But seeing as you're only using a 20 pin ATX connector, I would recomend getting the correct pin ATX connector PSU with at least 18 amps on the 12v rail or more if you can afford it. Using that PSU on your system is just asking for stability problems.
I tried doing the same thing with my DFI board while waiting for a new PSU, and while it worked, I was having simular stability problems as you.

according to the information I found online, the minimum psu requirement for the 6800GS should be +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amp Amps. Your PSU's 15A may not be strong enough to power the card, that's why you are experiencing boot problem. Try to upgrade the psu to a better psu(better brand/quality) and make sure that it has enough wattage and amp on the 12v.
BTW, I had a system where I had to push the gfx card into the slot better otherwise it won't boot into windows. What I had to do is push the far end of the card (far end from the Video connector's point of view) a bit more to be sure that it's connected and secured in the slot. Sometimes I will encounter the problem not being able to boot into windows but once I push it in, it then boot into windows fine. Try that.

I have that problem with my X800XL in my DFI board from time to time, mainly if I work on the MoBo changing ram or something of that nature. Like you all I need to do is push the card down a bit and it's good to go from then on out. After I figured that out, everytime I work on the inside of my case, I always reseat everything before closing thing up..................

The Coolmax is better than the Raidmax, but I would opt for something a bit better.
Check out this link and try to get something at least from the yellow list or better.

You can also run this program to figure out exactly how big of a PSU you need for your system.

And some other good PSU reads.

i would look into the psu that's from good comapnies, such as seasonics, enermax, antec. Do buy a psu that has good 12v and minimum of 400/450watss.

My recommendation, go for the OCZ Modstream 520W (like the one I got) or buy Enermax NoiseTaker 465W...

Whatever you do, DO NOT cheap out on your PSU! Like it's been said, spend the extra money if you have to, but purchase a GOOD PSU! From personal experience, a bad PSU causes NOTHING but headaches...

If you go with OCZ go with the Powerstream series instead of the Modstream. Modstream is just for show. The Powerstream series has a bit better specs.
