I'm looking to buy a low-end PC to install and fiddle with Linux on. I don't need anything special...a 900MHz P3/Athlon, 256MB RAM, and a 10 GB HD would be just peachy. Anyone got anything?

I don't need a monitor with it, unless you have an LCD you want to part with.

I have an old PC that is about an exact match in specs... I'll check to see if it survived the move and if I can find all the chassis hardware, I think it's missing the PCI slot cover though but I'd been using screws instead to hold the cards in place. Will update later with some specs if it works, was originally using a Knoppix CD on it so I know it likes linux. ;)

Great! Just let me know...no rush. I have a lead on another system as well...so it may be that I buy the other system...I'll let you know for sure. Thanks for the reply. Even if I don't buy yours, I have seen a lot of these type of systems selling quite well on Ebay.

Sorry, it seems to be in peices! I haven't located the side panels for it yet, and I'd need to reinstall the disc drives and hard drive when I find that too.

I so hate 1 week moving... I don't know where half of my computer parts are anymore! If time is not a factor and you are still interested let me know and I'll find the remaining parts, I think I know where the drive is at. Been meaning to sell this before I moved...

P3 866mhz
1x 256mb PC-133mhz CL3 RAM
One or two optical drives + FDD
~10 or 15gb WD hard drive
Standard ATX Mini-tower beige case

I don't have a clue what wattage the PSU is, is Epoch brand.

Thanks for the reply. If you could get me the exact specs on it, I would really appreciate it. Also, does it have a video card? Honestly, I have no use for a monitor so I wouldn't need to include that with the system.

Yes, I am interested in this system. When you say optical drives, I assume you mean CD-ROM or CDRW drives? And do you live in the US as well? Video card included? Don't worry about the wattage, it isn't going to be an issue. I'm not going to install some kind of wild card configuration...I'm simply going to use this system as an Ubuntu desktop. It's time I learn Linux.

The video card is an older ATi card with i think 8 or 16mb of ram on it and a d-sub and a longer full-size parallel connector, im not sure the EXACT specs but here are what i could get

Intel Pentium 2 500Mhz
3.5' FDD
ATi Rage 16mb video card
Asus MoBo 3 open pci slots and 2 open isa slots with an isa/pci shared modem
Desktop platform
Viewsonic monitor if wanted
20GB HDD
256mb unknown ram with unknown ram slts (they are small ram boards with low profile and not very wide)
No optical drive but there are connectors and slots on the desktop to add some

My brother found a heck of a deal for me at a local computer store so I went out to buy it. Sorry to send you guys scrambling for nothing. :( But I recommend you both put your systems up on Ebay to sell. Even these old systems are selling.

A local store eh? Everyone that I've tried around here is simply outrageous, even the flea markets!

I don't mind as fixing up this machine and selling it was on my to do list... I have it all put back together except for the two side panels which I'm still looking for...

It had a 32mb ATI Rage graphics card, some kind of Creative Labs sound card, a modem, and a PSU with a fan louder than anything I've heard to date, except for the 152CFM Delta fans I own!

Yep my local store was selling a P3/933MHz, 256MB, 20GB for $35 + a $10 donation to the local Harvest Food Bank. So, for $45 I got a heck of a deal I think. Now I just need to find a keyboard and mouse. LOL!

Heh, it's time for me to go digging through boxes, closets, and crawlspaces. :)

Sorry to send you guys on a wild goose-chase for nothing. I hope you get nice bids on Ebay...your P3 733MHz system should sell for around $100 I would think.

Whew, thanks. I know I'll need it. I'll be posting a blog address soon to chronicle my experiences in case others would like to see what a life-long MS user goes through trying to learn Linux.

Hmm, those aren't selling for even $70 unless ya count shipping on ebay ;)

I'd be interested in reading it, as I've dabbed in dual booting Red Hat Linux when version 9 rolled around on this PC, and since then played with the bootable Knoppix CD on other systems... But I wouldn't know how to use Linux really ;) Nabbed a free edition of Linspire (Lindows) too just to see what that is like, but I just haven't had time to install it on anything.

I will say I at some point managed to crash Red Hat easily enough though, and gave it a fatal log-in problem. If you attempted to log in as anyone other than the administrator's account it'd end up crashing during log-in....

I know in the end it is up to the features you need, for functionality MS OSes are just easier to use but there are lots of advantages linux has, like if one program crashes thje whole pc doesnt crash, you can just exit that application unlike windows, id like to hear feedback on your experiences with linux, that would be nice

Kougar: Hmmm, maybe I was looking at some different systems that you. I'm not sure! But certainly try to sell your system...no reason to have good, working components lying around. Or, you can try out Kubuntu along with me! Your P3/733 should run Linux just fine.

Wow, you crashed Red Hat. That's impressive! I'm sure that doesn't happen too awful much. :P Also, Linspire released a new Linux distribution recently called Freespire. As its name suggests, it's totally free. I guess that means Linspire is not free? Or at least some parts of it are not free?

mousiness: You're right, it's the features. I don't use my PC for games anymore. I just can't seem to find a game that engages me for very long. Maybe I'm getting too old...but I hope not!! I mostly do Internet surfing, email, chatting with webcam, watching TV shows on my PC, and occasionally listening to some MP3s.

But most of all, I want to find and use free software...rather than stuff I have to pay for or pirate. I'll post a link to my blog in the OS section of these forums. I'll post it when I dive into Kubuntu...probably this weekend.
