"Paper-launch be damned
Unless you've been living under a rock since last Thursday, you probably know Seagate leaked details of behemoth 750GB hard drives (http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1896), which was followed by an official announcement early Wednesday morning (http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1973). Original claims from Seagate said the drives would ship "earlier than expected," but it appears as though the new drives are already here.
NewEgg currently has the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB ST3750640AS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148134) for $540, a cost per gigabyte of $0.72. Unfortunately, the PATA version of the same drive has not surfaced yet, and neither has the rest of the Barracuda 7200.10 family.
500GB SATA hard drives generally have a cost per gigabyte of about $0.54, so the $0.72 for the Barracuda 750GB is a tad steep. However, like any other new technology, the new drives have a large premium. As soon as other merchants and distributors begin to pick up the line, we can be sure the cost per gigabyte will drop down into more competitive ranges. "
