The Official Bjorn3D 10 Year Birthday Contest

Well to celebrate 10 years being in the tech site business we are going to have a contest for our forum members. We will have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize,

We are going to have 3 sections to the contest to win and then the forum members will be averaged across all 3 sections to find the winners.

The contest will start on May 3 and will end on the last day of the month. Bjorn and I will then figure out the winners and announce them by June 3.


Section 1

The post: Whoever posts the most # of post on the site in the month of May. One liner spam post will not be counted. Members will be ranked on how they do on this.


Section 2

The games: 3 games will be in this part of the contest. The games are as follows.

Tetris

Asteroids

Kitty Toss

Members will be ranked on how well they do on this.

Section3

Make something that shows how much you like Bjorn3D. It is submitted in a picture at the end of the month. It must have something with Bjor3D in it. I would suggest not posting your pictures till the end of the month in a thread I will start on the last day of the month. You do not want someone one upping you.

Members will be ranked on how they do on this.


The winners will then be decided on by an average scoring done at the end of the month of all the areas.

The prizes are:

1st Place will get: XFX 7900GT VIVO with TombRaider Game

2nd Place will get: 2 XFX 7600GT's for SLI with GRAW Game

3rd Place will get: XFX Headset with Forcefeed back and Mic and XFX GamePad.

Each member will be ranked for each of the parts and will get a total overall score.
Then, the highest three members will get the prizes.
You must contribute in all parts in order to get a higher score.

Its all luck really as everything placed in the game is random. Basically a lower angle gives you more velocity and a higher one gives you less.

Well I had two games going, one with a high angle and other with a low angle. Its all pure luck and it sucks that score didn't submit; it had a good chance of staying in the top 3 for a while :(

Yeah, that Kitty Cannon game is SOOOOO addicting! I had to play it at work with the sound off initially.... I tried it out once I got home last night, and LOL! You must play with the sound turned "ON"! It's just not the same without it :P

Damn Johnie you sure stepped it up another notch in "Tetris" and "Asteroids". Highest I have seen is 350,000 score on "Tetris" from another forum. Its only the 2nd day of the contest and pretty much all the scores are maxed out. "Kitty Cannon" is pretty much the only game left for competition.

If that Asteriods game was like the original I'd already be ahead!! Most annoying is that this one respawns you while the tiny saucers are still flying by, so if you don't respawn into a rock you'll be blown up a second time before you can turn around to fire back! The original waited until a certain square area around the spawn point was clear of 'roids, and all enemy saucers were off screen first. Not to mention those enemy saucers didn't quite spawn as much!

I'm wondering if someone specially configured the game settings on this one, or it just came that way. :p

I find the spawn point fine. It seems to me that if anything is over the spawn area you don't spawn till the rock clears the exact area. If you re-spawned and there was a saucer still flying around would you stay still? I think not, especially those smarter smaller saucers. The big saucers just shooter everywhere.

As I said above, you often get blown up a second time by the small saucer that just killed you moments beforehand, before you can begin to turn around, let alone move. Secondly, while this game does not respawn you inside rocks, it will half the time respawn you infront of them far to close for you to even start to accelerate away, let alone turn in any direction.

The old DOS/windows 3.11 game waits until all rocks are outside a large radius around the spawn point, and waits for the saucer to either ram a rock or fly completely off the screen before spawning you again anyway.

That is why there must be some trick Johnie knows about and is not being nice and sharing... :p

Its all luck if you don't get blown away as soon as you spawn by the saucer or spawn right infront of a rock and there is no trick to Astroids since everything is random. It takes a huge amount of concentration thats for sure.

...just to explain...so you wont have to "think to hard" and have some headaches...:p :mrgreen: ...it's somehow as Kougar said...that in many times you get respawned just in front of some "rocks" or saucers...and in that case only mrs.Luck may save you...but such "very close encounters" are kinda rare...in majority of cases you can avoid being hit...if only your reflexes are fast enough...:cool: ...although I must also add that there were also times (in all my hours of playing Asteriods) when I lost 2 or 3 lives at once because of this...so it's about luck and fast response times (under 2ms...so make sure you upgrade your "old" LCD's with 8+ ms response times..:p :twisted: :mrgreen: ).

Also...sorry to dissapoint you...but there is no "secret trick"...speed,luck&lots of praying are all it takes...:-D Btw...I tried to improve my record for at least 50 times after making this one that still stands atm...but nothing...and if i think back...I remeber very well that game...I had some 7 or more lives...and then lost them all in maybe 2-3 rounds...and at that time....if I was little more carefull...I could do it 250K or even 300K...but it started to be boring and I also believed it will be enough for a while....;) (dont get me wrong...I am not trying to be smart...just telling the truth...that when you expect/wish something to happen...it surely wont happen at that time...but when you dont expect it...miracles may happen)...;)

Ok enough...and btw...why dont you try Tetris too? That's easier than Asteroids (at least to me)...!? ;)

I tried Tetris, but for some reason the vast majority of these specific flash games don't seem to register every keystroke, I find myself having to repeat a few every now and then. So once I progress to the faster levels the spacebar would "miss" and not register, so a piece wouldn't turn all the way and there goes the game. It irritates me to no end, so I just don't play those games. ;)

You just take it werty316...cause that way I will have something to "fight" for...not like now...when I play and play (and offcourse lose too fast in 99% of games played because somewhere back&deep in my mind I know that I already have the highscore...and thus I dont&cant push it to the max again)...:p ;)

Kougar...do you use ps/2 keyboard? Becuase You know...some keys might not work....try usb keyboard instead...:mrgreen: :twisted: ...just kidding...but it's true that at higher levels (10+) you need to be very fast and accurate...and if you press some key 1 time more that you should...you would need to turn that piece 3 times again before reaching desired position of it...and if that happens maybe 5 times (on higher levels)...you will surely lose that game...but dont worry....happened to me at least 100 times before making it to the top...:cool: ;)

I spent a lovely half hour or more playing with Kitty and even a couple of her clones at the same time today, to no effect better than 5th place. :p I think the game isn't as completely random as it seems, though! If I ever get back 1st place, I'll have figured it out. ;)

And I actually use a USB wireless setup for my mouse/keyboard... that I finally plugged into the PS/2 ports instead so I could get into my BIOS when needed. ;)

Is there some known bug with the Asteriods game that prevents a level completion or something? I have twice now reached the 100,000 points mark with first 7, then a second time with 4 lives and the game simply ceases to update.

Frankly it's getting rather aggravating when you are doing the best you've ever done, and have to reload the window, let alone you just spent an hour to reach that point. I complete the level and it doesn't move onto the next one... I know the games stuck because while I'm trying to suicidally ram any completely hidden rocks along the four corners of the "screen", not a single saucer will appear. I even let the thing sit there 5 minutes and nothing happened.

Yeah, I know. I posted cause I was pretty sorely ticked off, that was also the first time I'd reached 7 lives, and still was the best game I have had yet by far ;) It's really a badly ported flash game, gameplay even lags every now and then, and there is zero reason for that.

I will mention it helped when I realized I'd forgotten about the hyperspace key though, that was the trick you were using... ;)

Ya I never knew this either but it is the "SHIFT" key. All it does is transport your ship to another place on the screen. It can come in handy to get out of sticky situations or it can be disastrous like transporting in front of an astroid.

I agree that this is good for building even bigger community...and whats more important and almost unique @ Bjorn3D (when compared to other sites/forums) is the fact that we all get along well here...no dirty talk...no "backstabbing"...and no other bad stuff...really nice and happy community with lots of multinational members (so we cover entire Universe :mrgreen: :paw: ) and so on....really nice place to be...and thats why I really like it here (and majority of other members too I guess)...:wink:

And about competition...please dont make fast conclusions...because there are much more than just 3 of us (with kougar and werty316) who stand a chance of winning! I paused my game to take alot of breaks and I mean alot. I couldn't sit through an hour or two like before on ARP when playing Breakout for 8hrs was too much. Breakout was too easy and Astroid, and Tetris require more skill. Kitty Cannon is just luck so no challenge there.

Yes I know how hard it is...I was going mad....turning into psycho....hahahahaha...really....but at least @ asteroids...at this last record game...I almost always had some 7-8 lives...and like cursed...couldnt die....or no asteroid liked my spaceship to land on him....so first i said to myself...."ok, I'll quit @ 600K"...then when I came there...still with many lives..."I said ok...700K"...then 750K...and finally finished @ 800K+...although I could reach 1M for sure if I wanted to...not trying to be smart or anything with this...but really...you just need to be fast and totaly focused - and with some luck...you get life @ every second level you clear...and so if you also only lose a single life @ every second level...you're even...and you constantly have that "reserve" of lives (some 7 in my case)...:paw:

Dont give up now mousiness...because who cares about the games (as werty316 somehow said)...I believe you still have VERY good chances @ 1st section (nr. of posts)...and also @ pictures section....so those 2 together are 2/3 of total score...which is still enough to win a prize with some luck! Because you have to remember that not many other members have as many posts as you do (I know i am not even close - not even at 30% of your post count :roll: )....and also that they might not come up with best drawings/pictures (here I also have problems with deciding what would be best to do - and there are less than 2 days left... :???: :confused: )...so hold on...take a deep breath...and move on to what you do best...and leave games out if they arent your favourite...your decision to make...:wink: :paw:

I was gonna PM Scott about this and wondered if their is a top 10 for all three sections like in the games or just as this statement says.
