Intel Core Duo: AOpen i975Xa-YDG to the Rescue (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2750&p=1)
For anyone that still has a question about Conroe's performance claims... this should be a very interesting read!
In a nutshell, a Core Duo T2400 paired with the 975X chipset on an AOpen board is able to shut out an AMD Opteron 165 running in an Asus A8R32-MVP. Both processors were tested (And frequently retested as noted) running at 1.8ghz, and at a 2.8ghz overclock. Even with the impressive performance leads and some of the marginal leads, the Core Duo is reported to still able to reach a further overclock to 3ghz. And the Core Duo already has better power and thermal characteristics on it's side...
Don'tcha just like scandalizing headlines... :D
