Well, you can give this a shot...

First make sure your card is not overheating. Open up the case and ensure that there isn't any dust clogging the inside of the graphics cooler. If you can open the case while the system is running I'd check to see if the fan is spinning as well. If it passes this...

Go to your Add/Remove programs, and uninstall ALL graphics card drives you see, inlcuding ATI and those from previous graphics cards you may have had. After you restart Windows will load a default driver, and you can visit the ATI website here (http://www.ati.com/) and download the correct drivers for your OS. Make sure you get the Microsoft .net download listed in the same section if your system doesn't have that as well.

If after you restart and it finishes installing, you get the same problem then I'd follow some of these tips. I'd do the above first though ;) http://www.foxpop.com/imre/2005/vpurecover/vpurecover.html (http://www.foxpop.com/imre/2005/vpurecover/vpurecover.html)

Does this happen when you play other games or just COD2? Try reseating your video card and try different drivers.

is your card overclcoked, if so, return it back to the original clcokspeed. Check manufature to see if there's bios update for teh card/mobo and chipset firmware update. Then update all the drivers.
