The EETimes reports that Microsoft Windows Vista will not support IEEE-1394b, also known as Firewire-B, at launch. The EETimes claims a Microsoft representative attending a recent 1394b trade meeting announced that Vista wouldn’t support the standard at launch but would include support in a later service pack. A time frame for a Vista service pack is unknown, but judging from previous service pack releases it could take up to six months to a year to materialize.

theres no way that MS would leave vista without firewire-b (ieee 1394-800) support, its just impossible because vista is after all a multimedia interface (mostly) and the technology then would have to support it justly for the simple fact of having the latest up-to-date technology.

I have alays wondered this but what exactly is firewire used for? I have not seen anything that uses it so I was wondering if this would be a big deal for comsumers?

Firewire is used mostly for external hard drives and camcorders, and some other random devices from peripherals to even some home TVs, DVD players, and related equipment.

The thing is, compared directly to Firewire A (AKA 400) speed, you do see about a 45% increase in pure throughput speeds. For those people that use firewire, it's a very timesaving upgrade to have. It is a good notch above full USB 2.0 speeds as well.

Since they probably would rather not that I steal their charts, here's two direct links instead to Anandtech pages. Firewire and USB Performance (http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2465&p=25) and also MSI K8N Firewire and USB Performance (http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2739&p=11).

firewire is the most speedy I/O ever to connect everyday devices without going into the pc, i cant live without it, whenever i purchase a pc or build one there has to be firewire on it or ill just add a pci card.
