View Full Version : 6800GS fan noise :S
Hi there, i've just got all the parts to build my first PC, and am currently installing windows xp.
The thing is, the Point of View 6800GS I bought (PCI-E) is making loads of noise! (more than the PSU, 12" and 8" fans i've got in there ).
I can stop the fan by lightly pressing on it, and then there's hardly any noise in the case. Left by itself, it's making this whirring sound, which is really annoying, and the fan seems to be going very fast.
I can't see any visible obstructions or debris in the fan bit, any suggestions anyone?
I'm thinking when I've installed windows, of downloading coolbits and seeing if I can limit the fan speed in there - halving it might sort out the problem. If this is possible, what sort of temp do i want to be running the gfx at on idle (so I know how far down i can turn the fan speed).
Many thanks :D - any replies appreciated.
my rig:
Athlon x2 4400+
Asus A8N-Sli Premium
2gb corsair twinx CL2 ram
Antec TruePower II 480W PSU
WD Caviar SATAII 250GB 16MB cache
Samsung 930BF 4ms 19" TFT
Point of View 6800GS
*edit to add PSU*

Well, the fan speeds may be controlled by the software drivers... which won't exist until you finish installing XP and then install them off the drivers CD that came with your graphics card. ;)
Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) is reported to work with some nVidia cards, otherwise I'd suggest RivaTuner (http://download.guru3d.com/rivatuner/)
thanks mate :).. i'll keep you informed!

The fan speed problem should be fixed once you install video card drivers.
well, ive ran drivercleaner, cleaned it and installed the latest 84.43 beta drivers - however, the fan is still going really fast! :(
Does anyone know how i can adjust the fan speed? ive got coolbits enabled.
Thanks

Some fans just do not support any kind of fan controlling at all... short of plugging the GPU fan into a fan controller, which isn't safe to do, the only other option would be to replace the stock cooler with an aftermarket cooler.
If this program does not let you adjust fan speeds for your card and the above two didn't either, then it's safe to say nothing will. ATI Tool 25 Beta 14 (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/259). There should be a Fan settings section in the drop down menu. Let us know if that works!

Ive tried the three programs above, and am a bit lost/confused :S. speedfan only seems to be showing my cpu fans etc, and i cant see a drop down menu for 'fan' in ati tool :(. THe gpu is running at 46 degrees idle, gpu environment at 35. CPU is at 36 deg, mobo at 41.
actually - Rivatuner has done it :D
i've put standard 2d on 25% which has quietened it down loads :). low power 3d is on 40% and performance 3d on 40% too.
thanks

I really suggest you monitor those temperatures closely since you have modified the fan settings! A 46c temperature at idle is already little warm, and once you load up a game to play 40% speed for performance will definitely lead to overheating. Just because the card will throttle before it reaches extremes doesn't mean it's safe to do so as you can still fry the card. ;)
I'd really just consider just getting a better performing aftermarket cooler for the thing...

IMHO pc cooling has gotten way out of hand, the cooler processors are made for laptops now, next thing you know it sound cards are even gonna have active or passive cooling, its crazy how much cooling our pcs nowadays need.

..exactly...at least I would rather buy some better fan for your gr.card...maybe some arctic cooling or so...cheap and very effective...but then there are many many other great fans available...;)
I just wouldnt play too much with fan at its lower speed than originally set... :???:

I would suggest just to use two settings 50% or lower for 2D and 80% or higher for 3D apps. When you are playing games you won't noticed the sound of the fan anyways.

Actualy some of the newer revisions of Soundblaster's X-Fi soundcard have a passive heatsink.

You're kidding me?? Well then that just proves Mousiness' point! I have never seen nor heard of even a heatsink for a sound card... I bet within two or three generations from the X-FI they will include fans... :p
thanks for all the replies :)
i've decided to get a GPU cooler and a new CPU fan/heatsink thing - the machine's sitting on the desk next to me and i've decided i'd like a quieter system :).
For the gpu cooler (for 6800 series cards) i'm looking at
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=40
or
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=91
Which one would be better? (in terms of low noise / efficiency). Theyre similar prices.
Thanks in advance :D

From what I've been reading, the Accelero X1 should be the better choise if you have the room for the thing............;)

Agreed :) The Accelero is even outperforming the VF700/VF900 Zalman coolers in all the tests I've seen, for about half the price of the VF900 model.

I would choose either but the X1 just a bit more.
yeah i think i'll go for the accelero x1 then :), and a little tube of artic silver 5 :D.
I'm also thinking about a Zalman CNPS7700-CU for the CPU :) - it's massive but will fit my mobo.
Thanks for all your help guys ^^

Be careful with that cooler... they're great but after the AS5 sets it'll be almost impossible to remove the 7700 without pulling the CPU with it. Myself and two other guys I know have had this problem, and it seems fairly commonplace to hear about online with Zalmans and thermal compounds ;)
