Well I have fixed a LOT of computers but this one is pissing me off.
I just bought a new CPU P-4 3.0Ghz off E-bay.

Installed booted into xpand everything worked well; for a minute and a half.
Then it Reboots.

It is Not a heat problem.
It is not a Dual channel matched pair problem.
I can boot using Simtester and I have no problems running that.

I tried Safe mode w/ and wo/ networking same thing.

So thats what I am doing tonight I guess.

* update *

Simtester says that I have a bad piece of ram... Pulled em all and testing one by one.

I dont even want to use my computer tonight I wanted to drink beer in the sun. :(

Another reason not to buy some stuff off of Ebay unless it is new and sealed. Also another is AMD rocks so much more than Intel.

Was it used when you bought it?

Is there any way you can test this in a different motherboard? With a different power supply? Do ya have another OS to test with, such as the free Knoppix OS on a CD? Did you clear the CMOS on yer board and started from scratch yet?

What motherboard are ya using, and what kind of Intel P4 is it? Since you bought it off eBay... I'd sugest you check the CPU very very carefully for soldiered pins, if it is not an LGA type CPU.

I do believe that last Anandtech buyers guide you linked us to recommended the Aopen/Core Duo combo as having better performance than AMD, even if it was a little more and outside the mid-range segment ;) Intel is so going to rock AMD this fall... :D

O yess INTEL is going to destroy AMD once again I agree; now if I could only get this thing running......

* Update *

After that ram problem I have been testing, testing, testing.

Each piece PASSED on it's own!
I am now testing pairs using dual channel.

All this using the "suspect" CPU to run the whole show.

Well back at her...

Sorry to hear about your woes Gray, hopefully it's a bad piece of RAM, rather than a bad CPU... Just out of curiousity, was the CPU sealed in the box, or used? That could explain alot...

Well, since everything passed on it's own... When you reassemble to run the original setup again, soon as it boots go into the BIOS and specifically check the memory voltages.

I had that happen with my IS7 when I cleared the CMOS to test out a different CPU, as I had previously installed some new high performance memory a few weeks before hand (And manually set the voltage to 2.8 instead of letting it auto). It did not even try to match the RAM's required voltage specs and simply defaulted to 2.6 volts when the ram specs called for 2.85... To date I have never even seen some of the errors that little fiasco caused, but sudden reboots and tests pointing to bad RAM and CPUs were all in that list.

intel has always been the leader and always will be especially in laptop processors :)

Since each ram stick passed the ram can't be the problem. Hopefully you will get it all worked out Gray. Was teh CPU new or used when you bought it?

you should test the cpu to b esure that it's working (since you got it off ebay). Also, sometimes mobo can cause problems (it has happened to me). Have you test all the ram slots with 1 stick of ram fist. Sometimes 1 of the slot can be problematic.

Thanks all for your asistance.

Tested all ram MANY different ways, 5 hours + yesterday.
No problems.

I know my system is fine... I have not had any problems with this one ever realy.
At one point I had it working last night and then I downloaded SETI and tried to install it crashed. With the "new* CPU.

So I am back to my 2.4Ghz and it is working just fine as usual.

This blows goats!

The "guy" says that he will refund my money..... Is there member that is a hit man somewhere in OH that I can hire.

I was thinking of keeping it and RMA'ing it instead.

** hum, always a delema with new computer parts, not the biggest one in my life unfortunatly though.

Thanks again 4 the tips all.

Don't you need a receipt of some sort for an RMA? If the seller didn't provide one, it may prove difficult to get Intel to RMA it. Best of luck though, I would try it to RMA it myself if I had all the proper documentation that Intel needs... then you'd have yourself a BRAND NEW CPU (that you probably got a decent deal on, since it was from e-bay ;))

I think it is better to get a refund. I bought a brand new sealed A64 off of ebay and thought I needed to get it RMA'd but I needed a receipt. Turns out my A64 was fine though.

Well here's the final update on my E-bay CPU fun.

That guy who said he would refund my money for the defective CPU didn’t.
-----------------------------------------

He asked me to ship it back to him, so I did.
He then asked for an additional 2 weeks to pay me back. I said that that was fine.
This already being over a month since the auction ended.

After the 2 weeks he would not respond. Finally I emailed him almost another week later and gave him the choice to refund my money or I would have to Leave Negative feedback and I did not want to but I felt that I had waited long enough.

Ebay and Pay Pal limit the time you have to make a claim so I had to do something and soon, I think I had 3 days left to do something.

Turns out he had already left Neg Feedback for me, how pleasant.
Because of that ultimatum that I had given him he said that I had threatened him. lol.
And for that the "case was closed".
He then called me names in my feedback on Ebay and that was it.

So I filed with Pay pal.

He was not happy, made all kinds of claims. Problem is all the conversations we had I still had as I did it all through Ebay.

2 Weeks later they found in my favour. :) Yay, It still cost me some money but at least Pay Pal made the right decision. Best part is I got a message from Pay Pal saying that there was not enough money in the account and that they were now going to go after him for the rest. After trying to steal my money, he got what he deserved.

It wont stop my from shopping there once and a while, but I will just be more careful next time.

Good news you stuck it to that bad seller. I almost went through a similar deal where a buyer said an item was missing but it wasn't as I looked everywhere for it and nothing came up so he had to have been lying.

Very good to hear it worked out for you Gray! Nice to know Paypal will actually come through for a change... Interesting to note that covered for the part of the refund too, isntead of using that as an excuse to cop out.

Thanks for the update! :)

Yay, score one for the good guys! I don't have a Paypal account, as I've heard some crazy horror stories... plus it's linked to either your credit card or bank account, and I'm not totally sure about that... but it's nice to hear that Paypal went to bat for you and you won back your lost $$$! ;) :)

what my friend did last time in an ebay defective item situation
was he didn't even talk to the seller
he just photograph what happen to the item right away, send it back and talk to the bank company and deal with, it wasn't even through paypal

maybe next time dont go through conversation with the seller and deal with it at an instantly and maybe you could save a few pucks.
