Hey guys,

After putting my new hardware together (I'll soon put some pics and benchmarks), I am thinking about upgrading my CRT to LCD.
I have a pretty good Samsung 19" right now, but I want to move forward.
For now it's just a thought, but maybe you might have some recommendations.

What LCD would you buy ~500$ ?
Keep in mind I am a heavy gamer...

Thanks...

If I had that much to spend on a LCD, I'd go with something like this 20.1" ViewSonic.

"ViewSonic VP2030b Black 20.1" 8ms LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 0.255mm Pixel Pitch - Retail "

That is a GREAT LCD, sbrehm, nice choice :

I personally have an NEC 1715 17" LCD. It's a few years old, and is only 12ms, but it does the job for me ;) I haven't had any gaming issues with it, and the picture is FANTASTIC.

At work, we have LG L1950S 19" Flatron LCD's... and they are fairly nice. Good picture quality, and a 12ms response time, which is good enough for my work. I haven't tried any games on them, of course :P

I would choose almost anything made by either NEC or Viewsonic, by reputaiton alone with great confidence in a great product ;)

Monitors is one thing I don't know...

You oughta give this page a read though, Anandtech included some good Display Recommendations (http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2753&p=8) in their new buyers guide from the looks of it.

Basically get a LCD with a repsonse of 8ms or less, it has a higher contrast ratio and high brightness rating. The main factor is seeing a LCD with your own eyes.

Heres a roundup from Toms Hardware of 11 of the best 19" LCDs:

I think dell's lcd are pretty nice. they offer nice performance/price ration (although the latest lines of dell's lcd are not that great). Usually samsung has the best lcd out there.

I think it is quite difficult when choosing an LCD without actually looking at it but I like this one from NEC:

NEC 90GX2-BK Black 19" 4ms LCD Monitor 400 cd/m2 700:1 0.294mm Pixel Pitch (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824002129)

Although the one posted by sbrehm is probably your best bet for a little more $.

If I had that much to spend on a LCD, I'd go with something like this 20.1" ViewSonic.

"ViewSonic VP2030b Black 20.1" 8ms LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 0.255mm Pixel Pitch - Retail "

Your best bet is like Werty says, look before you buy if you can. They all look different to different people.
A good example would be the one I got from the local Wal-Mart, the specs are all that impressive, but when hooked up and put through what I use it for everyday and the price, it was a great deal for me at the time.
Always try and use a LCD with the apps and games that you use on a regular basis.

First, thanks for the information, I will look into it and think it over.

Yes, of course I won't buy anything without seeing how the screen performs in my own eyes...

I am thinking about the ViewSonic VP2030b Black 20.1", looks like a promising choice at first glance.
I'll have to investigate further...

Thanks!
