HI folks,

I bought a XFX 7800GS Extreme a few months ago and it has been fine untill a couple of weeks ago when it started making a buzzing noise.
I found that the noise was coming from BZ1 on the graphics card and it is doing it as sson as you turn on and when you shut down (so is not OS related).
If i lightly move the card in the AGP slot the noise stops and starts and if i put my finger on the buzzer it muffles the noise(so definately the card making the noise).

I have a 600 watt Seaward power supply so plenty of power, Cooling in the box is fine GPU running at 46C and CPU fine.
XFX support asked me to update my bios with version T70KUAD, So i did and it stopped the noise for a few days.

Now it has started again. The reason i'm asking for help here is the official support is so slow by email and want to play BF2.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

If updating the card to the most recent BIOS didn't fix the issue, I'll warn ya you'll likely need to setup an RMA to get a new one if you want to fix the sound problem. :(

Ouch, that sucks shawky.... hopefully the xfxsupport people will take a look at this and help you solver your problem... perhaps you could even avoid an RMA... but from the sounds of it, it looks like you might have to do without a video card for a bit :(

Dear Shawky,
We discovered that the heat sink cover plate manufacturer failed to remove the process plastic from the underside of the cover plate for some 7800 models. Please carefully remove the cover plate and remove the plastic. You can test the card for a short time to verify that the fan is operating smoothly then replace the cover plate as this is essential for proper cooling. please contact your retailer for their return policy. If they cannot assist you please let us know through the support ticket and we can RMA the card for you. The buzzing can indicate a more serious problem so please do not use the card any longer until you get a replacement.

I had a buzzing/whineing sound from my GeForce 7800GS AGP until today 25.08.2007 I got this noise in a lot of games and especially in 3Dmark06. I am playing a lot of Generals ZH, but this game has limited framrate, so the sound was not present in that game.

Some years ago my pc crashed randomly when running 3D applications. I got my screen filled with all kind of colours, and I had to power down the system. Then it came to my mind that my power supply capacity was too low (430w). Then I inserted one more (200-250w). Then my system worked fine until I got my XFX 7800 GS.

I located the noise on my 7800 card, and I found that the little black speaker on the gfx made the sound. Today I finaly began investigate the problem on different forums, and I found that this speaker is making a sound when it is not enough power from the extra molex contact.

But except from the noise my pc worked perfect...strange. The molex plug I used for the gfx belonged to the 430w psu, and I had no other units on it. Then I got an idea. I tried one of the molex plugs on the 250w psu (psu used for noen lights, optical devices and stuff). The noise dissapered! I do not know if it was too litle current, voltage or if some components in the machine made the power supply for the card unstable.

But if you have trouble with whineing from the gfx, try one of those dedicated gfx psu's.
