THE ISRAELI government has accused the search engine Google of spying on military installations in the Promised Land. It is not that Serge and Brin have been out there with their box brownies snapping the pictures of the nuclear weapons that the country doesn't have, it is more that Google Earth is now providing some jolly nice pictures of the country.

Yeah, and I wonder if Google really care and/or if Israel is gonna do something about it, as satellite images are easy to get from a lot of civil companies...

Well, look at it this way... Google goes out and buys massive databases of high-resolution pictures to upgrade their program. How're they going to know to manually edit every single secret, classified, or sensitive, location they end up with in the gigs upon gigs of pictures? It'd be pretty near impossible after adding in all the top secret bases that every country has that actually no one does know about... if they tell google to look at x,y coordinates and remove something then the cover would just be at risk of being blown. Although Google long ago put a program in place for concerned parties to get images modified for this reason... Isreal complaining like they did to the media only highlighted the exposure, and was really a pretty stupid thing to do from my perspective.
