this has been around for quite some time, duno if you tried it or not, but there's this quite cool effect if you click very rapidly without moving your mouse. yes, try it!

Back on topic not now if you want a good idea how fireworks actually work, here are some pages like this one (http://www.chennaiads.com/articles/fireworks.asp) and this one (http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa062701a.htm). Between the two you’ll get a good idea how fireworks are made and how they get their color, incandescence and luminescence. I just think it's the fact that when you click to close to the border it can't really display the explosion and kind of hangs
and concerning fireworks, i remember my chemistry teacher telling they are just normal elements in a capsule with some explosives with it. When the thing explodes the atoms get more energy which they radiate again afterwards, depending on the element you'll get different colours
