It looks as though AMD has purchased the video and graphics development company ATI. The rumor has been abound for weeks, and now it looks more like reality.

Well I have heard about the rumor that it might happen, just put a call into my AMD rep. We shall see.

Please let us know what you find out. I fixed the link, but even the Chinese source seemed questionable.

even i was suspecting this to happen just by intuition, i really hope they did because amd is a very dedicated company it would do well for ati

I definitely wouldn't be surprised after I read http://arstechnica.com/articles/culture/amd-ati.ars (http://arstechnica.com/articles/culture/amd-ati.ars), which is a three page deep .Ars Technica analysis on the pros/cons of this happening. Forbes magazine and a second financial 'zine reported this was in the works too...

Even so I'll wait until Scott gets confirmation, or official news breaks though even still... :-D

its really nice that AMD has ATi now because they finally have their own line of chipsets like intel, it will make them more competitive now and will give them an edge against intel, so now intel has to bump up the performance of their integrated graphics

MMMh, it maybe true or just another rumor. it's been posted on big new's site as well. So we'll see. apparently amd hasn't yet annouce anything but rather the news is posted on sinatech.

AMD was partnered with nVidia, so this should prove to be interesting news. It would either make AMD a very strong force in the graphics market, or it will remove dependence on nVidia's partnership, or both.

wow i never knew they were partners, thats interesting to know, we will fully know when AMD fully takes charge of ATi and combines the technology to work well with their chips

I think that was a hoax to shake things up with ATi and Intels tight bound like nVidia has with AMD.

it is kinda fishy because why would a high-profile company like ATi sell themselves? maybe there are unknown problems (financial) lurking in ATi but i doubt tghat, but this is such a huge rumor i doubt its a hoax, check this out...

nVidia might have to band together with Intel if AMD does aquire ATi after all, ATi and nVidia are rivals putting them in the same camp could be disaster. ATi would also have to redo their chipset lineup.

"nVidia might have to band together with Intel if AMD does aquire ATi after all"

With conroe coming out, that will be very good for NVIDIA.

I don't think this will happen, but I did notice on the stock market that recently, ATi was loosing about 3 million a day, and -67 million.

When you think about it, the market has created an environment where there should be some sort of polarity. Either ATI or nVidia should side with AMD, and the other sides with Intel. It is almost their destiny, based on the twin powerhouse market. I do see nVidia looking for Intel more then Intel would be looking to partner with ATI.

I don't know about that; AMD and nVidia are more buddy buddy than AMD and ATi; Intel and ATi is the other pair.

I originally thought that since Intel and nVidia's business models are so similar they would be a good pair. But after realizing that they are both alpha-companies, they wouldn't do well together. You are correct that ATI and Intel would be a better fit.

if AMD does end up purchasing ATi itll be one messy turnover

Like I said before I think nVidia might ask Intel for help.

Nah, I'd bet they would stay AMD and ATI we as know them, but they'd combine their engineering talents for future designs and fab processes... and probably expand AMD's fab production capability even further than just that new fab in NY state.

if AMD PURCHASES ATi AMD would probably want their way for everything, i know i would
