Hi, I don't really know much about these... Would it be possible to get one that can record TV shows and that I can convert old VHS tapes with?

Thanks for the help,
Nathan

As a matter of fact, yes, there is! I purchased the V-Stream Studio TV Terminator for under $30 at NewEgg. It's great, and it ever has a remote!

Yes, it does. You have to plug the cable into your mini sound jack.

Wow, $30 to be able to transfer old VHS tapes to my hd? Hmmm, curious, I will have to look at this :) I have tons of old shows on VHS that I'd love to archive... not the best quality, but they'll do! Thanks Das! ;)

In addition, it is an FM radio tuner, Cable TV tuner, and a UHF/VHF broadcast tuner; all of which you can store to your hard disk drive, and burn to DVD if you like.

Plus, it only takes up one PCI card slot. 8-)

Are you getting good video quality with this? Most of the customer reviews on TigerDirect are very negative:(

Well, it isn't bad. In fact it is very far from bad. I rate it a 7 on a 1 to 10 scale. Keep in mind that what you are capturing is already half the resolution of DVD; so it will never be DVD quality, but it comes close.

I edit video all the time, as well as produce DVD's. I really think that it has done well for me.

Yeah, you can't expect dvd quality from a non-dvd source :P I'd just like to preserve a bunch of old cartoons actually that I haven't seen or heard from since the 80's :P ;)

It can do that PLUS all of the other stuff that Das mentioned! And for only 1 PCI slot... time to do some shopping methinks ;)

I also wanted to plug my video camera to it. And I think it records at high quality...

If it is a digital video recorder, then you should go directly into your computer and use Windows Movie Maker to capture the digital content.

What model of video camera is it? There is probably an option where you could've changed the quality of the recording. Our Sony camcorder allows three different options if I remember correctly... more quality = bigger files and less time remaining... We chose the middle option, as it gave us good video/audio quality while keeping the file size decent.

Your resulting video will ultimately depend on the intial quality settings that you chose before you began recording the footage...

My camera is a Digital8 handycam.

so does anybody know of a tv tuner that doesn't lose quality? Even if it is an expensive one I could proably find it off ebay or something... I just don't want to lose any quality.

Well, it's a Hi8 cassette format handycam, so if you just used the default settings, I think you should be getting Hi8 quality, which is supposed to be roughly 3x the quality of VHS... but I've never used Hi8, so I cannot confirm this claim. That is, unless you used 8mm cassettes, which are also supported by this handycam :P

As for a high quality tv tuner, sorry, but I'm as new to this stuff as you are... The thought of a tv tuner card has always been in the back of my mind, but other components seem to always take its place ;)

I don't believe this TV tuner does lose quality; or else I wouldn't use it or suggest it.

Your Sony Hi8 Digital should be just fine if you use the iLink (firewire) cable to capture through Windows Movie Maker. I have used WMM with your exact camera and it turned out great.

is this the product I would need to build kind of a DVR for recording TV shows on my computer while im out etc.? Also, would I have to run the cable from the tv tuner box to my PC to get the channels correctly? Or is there some sort of software that can work that out for me?

I have Cox cable in S.D. California if that matters.

This is basically what you need. There are many different brands and models to choose from. Its basically a PCI card that plugs into your mobo. You do need to run your cable to the card. The card is basically a TV tuner. You can record programs to your hard drive.
this is a model I have used in the past

Another product to consider would be an All-In-Wonder from ATI depending on your current video card situation. They have a TV tuner as well as inputs for capturing various types of audio and video. I have used some of these in the past and they're decent all around video cards.
