PARIS (Reuters) - Paris wants blanket wireless Internet cover by the end of 2007, helping to make it the most connected capital city in the world, Mayor Bertrand Delanoe said on Tuesday.

Under a new plan, the city hopes to set up 400 free WiFi access points next year and allow Internet service providers to install antennae on strategically-located public property.

"We will act fast and firmly... to create the most favorable conditions for Paris," Delanoe told reporters at city hall. "It is a decisive tool for international competition and thus important for the city."

The plan also calls for slashing taxes on companies that lay down fiber optic cables in a drive to have 80 percent of all buildings within the city connected to so-called 'ultra-high speed' fiber optic networks by 2010.

"Sixty percent of Parisian households already have high-speed connections. ... Our goal will be not only to maintain this but also to move a step ahead," Delanoe said.

License fees for fiber optic cables already snaking through the city's sewer system would be cut by 25 percent, and the tax break would go up to 90 percent for the first 400 meters of new cables that branch out to connect buildings currently lacking the high-speed lines.

The free wireless access points -- to be located in parks, squares, libraries, and public areas -- will be set up by private firms that win contracts to be awarded in early 2007.

The project will also experiment with free WiFi access for an entire city quarter by the end of 2007.

Delanoe said he would be submit the plans for city council approval early next week.

I think this might be far fetched. My small town has hot spots for wi-fi but full coverage would take alot of $.

Not quite as much as you think. Reno (Nevada) has a lot of casinos, and they broadcase WiFi access almost a mile away. I think that Paris could easily accomplish this for about a couple million dollars.

I agree, with some of the tech that is out there it's only a matter of using the best locations to maximize coverage, while not overdoing this to the point small deadzones become excessive.

Nice to see that they are thinking ahead and providing the drive to hasten development. Corupus Christi is the nearest TX city to here that has a citywide WiFi program being implimented... although I'd much rather they lay fiber out here instead!

This shouldn't be all that hard as there is wireless technology available with an action radius of +-50km if i'm not mistaken. (it's some sort of new wifi technology, forgot how it was called though)
Personally I think Paris is doing this more for the prestige of it.

Yeah, I gotta agree with GIBSON there... Paris just wants the glory of being able to proclaim "We have city-wide wireless internet access! Look at us!"

And such a costly venture would most likely result into some sort of amount that might be dumped onto the populace to cover, which would be bad news all around :(

Its easy enough to to, the only problem would be hills like in San Francisco, where many people cant use the city wifi because of hills in the way.

A lot of cities are building wifi, and many times some company pay for it because they get to advertise through it. Even my little city Århus in Denmark is getting in on it. But why shouldnt they when its free?

Good to hear that Denmark is ahead of the times. Reno (Nevada, USA) barely has coverage with free WiFi, and Las Vegas is even worse. Helll, I just stayed in two different resorts, and neither of them had free WiFi; they both wanted $10 a day.

Despite being a small country, Denmark is not far behind... We were actually ranked number 4 of the most computer technical countries(or something like that) and topping the US :P

Yes, denmark is a really modern country, however, isn't it one of the most costly to live in too?

Yep, its is.. The Tax is so high that i can get all my hardware half priced in the US. But we also have GREAT FREE healthcare, and free university. We are actually promised an education even if we flunk every subject..:-D

And the Pay is way higher.. So dont think i wanna trade with anyone, even if the meat cost less in US
