View Full Version : FedEx and The Card I Won 2 Months Ago

So everyone knows I was one of the winners of Bjorn3d's 10th Anniversary Birthday Contest and that I recieved the video card on June 13th.

Today being July 7th, FedEx thought that they should send me an invoice for this package. Its been around 3 weeks and now FedEx sends me an invoice saying I have to pay for custom clearance charges for it.

FedEx has screw me 2 months ago with a package I never got and the package ended up being returned to the sender with no reason and now they do this to me. Its a good thing I don't live near their customs office in Mississauga, Ontario. I truely gate FedEx customs.

I was wondering if maybe XFX could contact FedEX and see if they can take care of this?

I think its ridiculous I have to pay for custom clearance after I recieved the package almost 3 weeks ago.

Sounds like it's time to move to the US!

At least you've received your card :( Mine are still in "transit" and have experienced a "delivery exception" whatever the hell that is... I'm gonna have to call'em up and see what the hold-up is all about...

No fault of Scott or Bjorn3D, but it is frustrating

I have forward this link to Ryan my guy at XFX to look at and hopefully get taken care of.

Heh, well, just as my patience ran out, what oh what did I find on my doorstep upon my return home? :) :) :) (without a customs fee... for now?)

(I was going to edit my original post, but I wasn't sure if anyone would see/read it as it was originally an older post)

Here's to hoping that XFX can help you figure all of this out ;) To be sent a "bil" of sorts from the duty office close to a month after receiving an item is crazy... Whenever I've had to pay duty on an item, the amount was requested right then and there. They could not deliver the item to me until the duty amount was paid... weird that they sent you an invoice after the delivery?

It seems there was a letter included from FedEx Trade Networks which basically states they release any merchandise under the value of $1300 and send a charge for duty later to ensure a fast delivery.

Hi guys...hopefully you'll work things out in best way possible...

All I wanted to say was...that I also got an impression that they'll charge me something later...cause they contacted me from our local office (Fedex)before releasing items to me...and asked me what is this inside the parcel (like they cant open and look inside, huh  )...so when i explained...they said something like....ok...we need to get customs clearance (and that I'll have to pay tax if needed)...and that I'll receive parcel next day...which I did...but am somehow still waiting for some possible bill from customs... Although no big deal...cause even if I need to pay something....we are talking about maybe up to 20-30$...but still...why pay them....when I can i.e. buy new cooler/fans with that money...

And that wasnt the first time...one time they actually "made some mistake" (mistake my a55) and wanted me to pay around US$800!!!(yes you heard that right! I still have their document somewhere!) for shipping and "other" charges of a product which was worth US$150 at best...and (even funnier) EVERYTHING was already paid by sender! I though I would have a heart attack at that time....hahahahaha...really...just imagine...and I also had to send them bunch of papers...and contact numbers of sender (which they also already had!?)...just to later say ok....here is your parcel...everything is paid and ok....they didnt even say sorry...:???: :(

So from all my previous experience with Fedex....I can only say that they really are fast with actual shipping....but so what...when they later complicate things up much much more than they should! Maybe they should have better relationship with customs and also check everything when they pick up parcel from sender...rather than delaying delivery later, because something is missing and so on...

Ok...like I said...hopefully you'll work things out..and everything will be ok...Good Luck and Best Wishes!

Wow, very cool! If you ever win prizes on a game show or win the lottery you still have to pay any taxes or other fees involved. That's great that XFX is taking care of this.

Yeah, what XJnine said. XFX got some good marks for this one... giving away not only the graphics cards but covering shipping and customs to boot? Ya couldn't possibly ask for anything more...

Kudos to XFX!

Thank you and XFX for your quick resolution to my problem. Now I am wondering to the current status of my duty charges? Have they been taken care of IE: paid in full, similar to werty316's duty charges?

Chalk up another one for XFX!

I'd rather keep the contests and have to pay the customs for the free goodies, than not have any free goodies at all to not pay customs on.... ;) Kudos to XFX for covering these charges yet again...

Indeed, XFX respect +1!
Anyone have an idea what customs to europe would be? I wouldn't like to see a forum member have to pay 100€ or so (though of course it's a great prize, but charges like 100€ would kind of take a bit of the fun away eh)

I'm pretty sure it will be less than 100 euros...but you can never know...I guess you can find out what the duty charges in you country are...

It really depends if you/XFX declare on it as a GIFT/PRIZE and then it should be DUTY FREE...and it also depends what the prize is and how much you're really willing to pay in order to release it...

I bet that if you won a 7950GX2 and you had to pay 100 Euros as duty charge, you would do it...

Yer, I know. I just think it's gay how the state profits of gifts. Same like they profit from people dieing, damn bloodsuckers. Anyhow, I'll stop here or I'm going way off-topic ;-)

It doesn't matter if you put an item as a gift or whatever as I have been dinged with duty when a package was a gift. Most of the time it matters all on the declared value.

If I understand the customs rules correctly concerning contest winnings, duties etc should be prepaid by the prize shipper.
I really do hate how Fedex handles cross border shipments though. Nothing payable on delivery so you think there were no brokerage fees or taxes, and then you get a bill in the mail a few weeks later.
DHL does the same.

werty316

Heres the deal with this situation though. If I didn't pay the duty charges would have been layed on XFX so its win win for moi http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/1266/thumbup2mb0.gif

Funny how you brought back a almost one month old thread.

Yes, what werty stated above is actually exactly what is currenly occuring with FedEx, XFX and myself regarding my prize :P If the recipient does not pay the duty charges within 90 days, the charges automatically revert back to the sender without any penalty to the recipient... a good thing in my books ;)

So, I guess if anyone else receives a duty charge notice, they should just be able to discard it and let the charges revert back to XFX...

According to the August contest rules, it is now officially the winner's responsibility to pay all custom/duty charges. Small price to pay for free loot, I think. ;)

Ah yes, true enough... pay a (hopefully) small fee for free swag is always welcome ;) ...but what would happen if a winner from now on just let the 90 days come and go? As I was told, FedEx would then bill the sender, which would be XFX... I wonder how that would work? :?
