[qute]Gates talks of a January '07 launch for Microsoft's next geneation operating system

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is speaking out on Windows Vista. Vista has been stricken by numerous delays (http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2507) and feature reductions (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3019) over the years, but if Gates has his way, we'll be seeing Vista on store shelves in January of 2007.

According to Gates, there's an 80% chance that Vista will be ready in time for January although he does say that the launch could slip slightly if problems arise. "We got to get this absolutely right. If the feedback from the beta tests shows it is not ready for prime time, I'd be glad to delay it," said Gates at a presentation in Cape Town, South Africa. The Chicago Tribune reports:

He said Microsoft was investing $8 billion to $9 billion in developing Vista and the company's next version of Office, its key cash-generator. He said the company's software partners, in developing and adapting their own products for the two launches, would invest 20 times as much as Microsoft. Gates said he hoped the next version of Office would be ready in December.

It was announced just last month that Microsoft Office would be delayed again as well. That office suite was originally planned to launch in time for the holiday, but was later pushed back to launch with Vista in January 2007 (http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1419) and then pushed back again to a more cloudy “early 2007” launch (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3106).[/quote]

Is anyone here using the Beta of Vista yet?
I usually like to try these things but I have not gotten around to it.

If so what do you think and what are the specs of your system?

No kidding whats the hold up? Gates even said if it ain't ready for Jan he has no problem delaying it again argh. I guess its better so its stable with no bugs and I am in no real hurry as I like XP just fine.

I haven't tried it yet but others in here have I think.

I've used Vista, and the specs are in my sig. ;)

The first thing I'll say is that you will either need a dual-core system, or in the very least HyperThreading to retain that snappy, light feel. I have run Vista with HT on and also with it off, and the difference was quite noticeable. Also, you will (Finally) see some performance gains from using a x64 bit OS on a x64bit enabled/designed processor...

I would be using Vista in place of XP right now, except for a few issues with the UAP prompts that drive me nuts. ;) However the was a major build release after the launch of Beta 1, so if you fire up your bittorrent program you can nab a copy of Vista build 5456 and give that a shot. I expect the key provided by MS during the Vista DL will let me use it just fine, so I plan to give it a try shortly... LINKY (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3019)

Are you sure that config won't lag when she wants to view her e-mails?
I'm a bit puzzled Gates is speaking to the press about this, hadn't he left microsoft a month or so ago?

He will step down from day to day in 2008. He will continue to be Chariman of the Board after that.
