Meanwhile AMD continues to expand its facilities

AMD announced today that its processors made by Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. have started shipping. (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_543~110532,00.html) AMD recently picked Chartered Semiconductor as its second source for manufacturing because of heavy expansion activity. AMD said that its partnership with Chartered has given it some breathing room during this expansion period. According to AMD's director of manufacturing Thomas Sonderman, "this [partnership] gives us the ability to modulate output based on customer demand."

DailyTech previously reported that AMD and Chartered entered into an agreement to start producing chips for sale by mid-2006. AMD processors are manufactured in Chartered's Fab 7 facility. According to reports, Chartered is producing 90nm AMD processors. AMD's senior vice president of logic technology said "we selected Chartered to augment our production because of a shared philosophy of flexibility and agility in manufacturing."

According to AMD, Chartered will continue to manufacture processors for AMD well past 2007. Facilities from both AMD and Chartered will focus on manufacturing 65nm processors but 65nm production will not begin at Chartered until mid-2007.
