so one day i turned on my computer and mad viruses attacked my computer. they make icons occur on my desktop and try to make me download fake ad removal software. i ran my leet aol security center, and my ad-aware with the latest definitions. it doesnt really slow anything down, it's just an irritating pain. do you guys have any suggestions to get rid of this nuisence? my protection software stopped picking stuff up, or it does and just reloads itself.

It sounds pretty bad and if have tried an anti-virus app and Ad-Aware and Spy Bot Search & Destroy and nothing gets fixed I would do a full format instead of trying to get rid of everything.

It could be one of those ghost viruses that reappear everytime you reboot. I had one and had to format to get rid of it

Do you have any idea exactly what you're infected with? ( I'm mean your PC of course, I don't want an actual medical history)

Had the same thing. First run adaware then search and destroy it wil say that you need to reboot to get rid of the rest... Once rebooted it will clean the computer before it loads the desktop... Worked for me, also try
Nod32 (antivirus) http://www.eset.com/ and Ewido(malware cleaner) http://www.ewido.net/en/

Ewido will probably get it if Spybot cant

Welcome to the forums, Nerv!

Are you running both Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy? If you have run both of these and let them reclean the PC before windows finishes loading but the spyware/adware still keeps coming back then you will either need to invest a alot of time manually tracking down files, or simply back up your data and reinstall everything. I hate to recommend telling people to reformat, but since I've cleaned up a few machines that both Ad-aware, Spybot, and a few other tools couldn't remove on their own I can say it takes some computer know how. Just a thought, anyway.

If you'd rather not reformat, then make sure you have both ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/)installed and you've used them. I would then suggest booting into safe mode on your computer before continuing. Now DL this program and let it clean what it finds http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ (http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/). Then you should run this online anti-virus/malware scan to see if it finds anything serious http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/). I'd run Ad-aware and Spybot again after all of this is done. If after you reboot back into windows and you find spyware/adware still showing up then you either have a program installed that is reinstalling it, or you need some professional cleaning. Or a simple reformat and new install from a clean slate would work as well.

It tends to help if you run these cleaners from safemode.

Glad to hear you're back up and running, even if a reformat had to be done. With infections that bad it is always safer to just (Carefully) backup what you can and start over... Just make sure you scanned everyhing that you did backup with an anti-vrius AND Ad-aware, and even Spybite S&D too before you use it again, so you don't reinfect your clean system from a infected file. ;)

Well at least you got it, same happened with my old HD but was completely unsuable until it put it as slave a year later and adaware found everything

Just wonder...was that SpySherrif that your machine was infected with? And it also bundles with another one (some trojan if i'm correct)...so from there on...they keep on displaying that your machine is infected and suggest you some antivirus solution (only to convince you to buy that stuff which doesnt work later...so bad bad bad...). Also lots of popups start appearing...and no anti-pop up software can block that...also changes homepage in IE (maybe somewhere else too - dont know!?)...and so on....

Actually a friend of mine had this...he got it from some XXX site where he though he would be able to get some adult movies for free...hahahahahha...I mean...from 1000's of real sites with adult movies....he picks up infected ones...hahahaha...and actually...we spent some 5 hours to get rid of that nasty stuff....although I first though..."this one is gonna be easy...just run antiivirus...delete them...and voila..."....boy i was wrong... The point was that if you didnt delete ALL traces at once...it just reappeared upon next reboot....and since it made more copies of itself...you can imagine how hard battle it was... I also needed to delete all its "roots" from Registry manually...and much much more...finally...getting back old Homepage in IE was another mistery to solve...big one....because it also didnt allow to change anything....like it was all locked to that website which that "Sheriff" added.... Dont ask me how I made cause i dont know...i just know i had to do many reboots...played with all settings available....had 5-10 different programs open at same time..and more....:-D

And then....when i finally made it...same guy calls me again after some 14 days....to tell me he has same problems again.... I though I will go crazy....cause i installed him all the latest antivirus, firewall, adaware, antispyware, registry cleaner, etc...just to prevent this to happen again....soooooooo...I asked him HOWWWWW???...because I knew that this trojan (or virus or whatever) wasnt new...so antivirus should pick it up before it installed itself...and the guy replied...."Well...it did warn me...but I clicked ALLOW"....got the point? And not to mention he was about to see exactly the same site as upon 1st time....SAME SITE...from all others available...and he clicks ALLOW (allow me to install myself...I am your best friend mr.Trojanius Virusos)....

Soooooooo....another 2+ hours were needed to repair machine again....8) Some people will simply never learn....so if you're among them....then all I can suggest to you is....remove plug from phone/cable line...and never use internet again....ever!

Good luck...

Yours,

Sheriff Johnie...

Frustrating isn't it. I know the feeling. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have a pc unless they have some kind of licence

Hahahaha...exactly...or maybe they could have a pc...but no internet...

Well...helping friends is something I am always ready to do...also...I know something might happen again...but from then on....I mean come on...it looks like either they're joking with me or dont really care whether they got tons of that garbage floating around their pc's....

And in my case...I am sure I havent heard the last of that friend...hahahaha...I know someday he'll call again with same or similar problem...and all I'll do at that time...is take scissors with me...and cut his internet cable...and job done...  8-) :-D
