I have a 7900GT Extreme Edition that has a fan that spins 100% all the time. I filled out a request at the XFX help desk a week ago and didn't get a ticket #. So I figured something might have messed up so a day later I sent another request. It's been a week and I still have not heard from XFX support and I don't have any ticket #'s. I've tried calling there tech support twice and could not get someone to talk to. Does it usually take this long to get a ticket # and is it always this difficult to get a hold of tech support with this company?

I would try to get them on the phone again. The email system takes a while, and a week may be a short wait. Besides, I would KEEP that 7900GT fan running 100%!

Make sure you used a valid email address when you registered on XFX website and it is an email that you check regularlly. It took me a day to get a ticket number when I needed to. Also I don't think XFX can do anything about the fan running 100% all the time. Its just the way the fan is and I don't think it can be controller with any software.

There is no reason why the fan should be spinning 100% when I'm on the internet or doing something that doesn't stress the videocard. It is loud as hell and I'm afraid if it spins this fast all the time, the fan will burn out much earlier than it should.

I used a valid email and I check it a couple of times a day. I would hope XFX didn't take away the option to throttle down the fan when not using the videocard extensively. I'm guessing it's a faulty card that won't slow the fan down or maybe a BIOS update can unlock the ability to throttle down the fan. If that is not the case and I can't quiet this sucker down, I will get rid of this card and get one that does.

Well, creating a thread here on Bjorn3D should help your cause, as there is an xfxsupport member who regularly scans the forums. I was under the impression that all of the fans on the 7900 series were loud and ran at a higher speed most of the time? Wasn't that one of the issues of the series, besides the more important artifacting issues?

The fan on my 7900GT cannot be slowed down and I doubt the fan on your can. I think the fans on all XFX 7900GTs run 100% all the time and only thing you can do is use an aftermarket cooler which would void your warranty.

Welcome to the forums Gremmie!

Unfortunately I have to say I'm pretty sure Tomato and Werty are correct, this was one of the issues with the XFX 7900GT graphics card unless it has since been rectified by XFX in later card releases.

It's best to wait for official confirmation from XFX though anyway, their support person should post here early tomorrow.

Thanks for the all the info. I certainly hope there is some way to kick the fan in 2D mode because I really like this card. It runs my games just fine (no artifacting or anything) but I would have to get rid of it if the fan is always going to be like this. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so loud and annoying all the time. I don't mind it spinning up when I'm playing a game, but it's rediculous when the fan spins like that all the time.

Unless you want to use an aftermarket cooler you'll have to get a different card.

Dear Gremmie, I am sorry you are having difficulties with setting up a support ticket. I do not want you to give away any private information so if you could put your first name into this thread I can look into finding your ticket number. As for the fan running at 100%. Once I get your information I can send you a BIOS fix that will enable your fan to be variable speed.

Good job XFX, this was really needed! I think there needs to be some notices put up so current 7900GT owners will know this fix exists and can get it. :)

Thanks for the prompt reply and for the information on my issue. My first name is Michael. I apologize for the duplicate submissions that I made to the help desk as I did not know if it was working correctly. Let me know if you need any other info from me. Thanks again.

Anybody who desires to have the variable fan on their 7900 series of cards should go to www.xfxforce.com ==> support ==> Help Desk and request the BIOS from the support team. Please be sure to register the video card you have correctly so we can send you the proper file.

Thank you for the heads up. I filled out a new ticket requesting the BIOS. I don't mean to be an annoyance, but what is the ETA on how long it will take for us to receive the upgraded BIOS? Thanks again.

Dear Gremmie, We are constantly making improvments to our service and support team so it should be within 24 hours. It really is a simple thing to either link you to the BIOS or send it to you in a Zip file. If you are requesting the zip file please make sure to use an e-mail that will accept .exe files or your mail blockers don't automatically junk mail this type of message. G-mail is one service that I am aware of the will not allow .exe files to be sent as attachments.
