I need help with Folding @ Home.
1 pc.
I have a 2,66ghz p4 (not HT)
1gig RAM
9800 pro
2nd pc.
pentium 3,0 Ggz D803
2 gig ram
nvidia 6800
Both computers run 8-10 hours a day with, sitting idle about 4 hours each. (right now they run longer)
I've tried both the Console and the GUI versions on both computers and these computers have been running more then 24 hours each. on pc 1 i got 1600/20000
and on pc 2. i got 2200/20000. I dont know if this is normal speed but my current problem is that i dont even show up on the F@H website or on the team list.
Can enyone help me, thx :???:

I've said so before several times, you are not waiting nearly long enough Toxic.
You will NOT get points until those work units reach 100. That only happens when that 1600/20000 turns into 20000/20000. Letting your PC run with just F@H running for 4 hours will take a very long time for both of them to complete. Until you complete a single WU, don't expect to see any points or your name on the lists.
If you think your WUs are going unusally slow then open up your task manager and verify that folding@home is using 80% or more of the CPU's cycles, and that there is not some errant program getting CPU priority. F@H runs at the absolute lowerest thread priority, so if anything is trying to use the CPU it will jump the queue infront of the F@H program.
Hopefully when you changed over from the GUI to the console versions you did not redownload completely new WUs, as those would now be wasted and cause some delays with the folding@home work allocation before they finally expire in about two months. F@H can't create new WUs until the ones they sent out are completed and returned.

This system should run either GUI or console version, I recommend console. It should use the full amount of ram, and run when low or idle. I will take this system almost a week to get through one full project under the current usage times. You should make sure you have joined team 41608.
2nd pc.
pentium 3,0 Ggz D803
2 gig ram
This system should be using two seperate console clients only. For example: Create a folder named Folding, then create two folders named CPU1 and CPU2. Run a console client in each CPU folder. Make sure you configure the console client to run as a service, and split the amount of available RAM in half for each console client. It should take this system about three days to complete a project with the current usage.

You must not have read through my FAQ, which explains that the GUI version is not recommended on the dual-core system, and that you should be running two seperate console clients on that system. You will get points once those projects are completed. Make sure you go back and read through my FAQ here: http://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9230&page=1&pp=10

Okay, so checked my task manager and its running fine.... So i will just have to wait...
When i changed to the GUI I didnt redownload new WU's, I read the wiki on how to change:P...
Thx for your help, I gues im just not patient enough :(

You should still be running Console and not GUI. And you should be running two clients on your Pentium D, not just one.

I will try what you said, and configure the system that way, thx for your help

I get an error saying
Folding@home shutdown: File_IO_error
Trying to configure it the way you told me, it started all over with the WU

Q:I get an I/O error when I try to change settings. What happened?
The F@H client is still running as a service. Services are programs that run in the backround. You should right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Manage". Go to "Services" and find the "FAH@H" service(s), right click and select "Stop". You can now work with the F@H client. When you are done, don't forget to right click the client again and "Start" the service (or restart your system).

The consoles look fine, but it appears as though you have more then these two FAH@H services in your services list. Make sure to disable the one's that no longer work.
Also, it looks like your work started over. Make certain that you have joined the Bjorn3d team! Refer to my FAQ for reconfiguring settings.

Okay, did that, was just any empty shell.

It did start over, and i made sure i was on team 41608 ;-)
so now i have 2 new questions... If i want to set this up on more computers do they need seperate ID number... They only come up to 8 and if you use all dual core machines then you can only tun 4 systems... ???
2nd. When i rebooted the computer i see the processes run in the manager but how can i check on the progress, they dont show up in the task bar...

The ID number feature is only for each computer. For example, on computer #1 with only one CPU, then that F@H client ID would be 1. If it were dual cores running two clients, they would be 1 and 2. If a system had 8 CPU's, then you could run eight clients with ID's 1-8.

Refer to the "unitinfo.txt" file after you configure your client

THX :-D
But does that mean i can only run four seperate machines if they have dual core?? ?

You don't get it. Each machine can use 1-8. Each machine will have at least one client running ID 1, for the first CPU. You can run it on as many systems as you like.

I did it for self-preservation first, and beating Scott second. But as of yesterday, Scott has put out some serious numbers!!! So at least I might not die of cancer, so I have got that going for me.

My grandmother died of cancer and my granddad had a brain tumor, So i'm all in it for the research... If i beat scott, thats just a bonus prize

Quick question, will my stats show up when I have completed one WU?
Sorry but I really didn't want to make a thread just for one question.

Also in the GUI version, it doesn't matter what I set the "Molecule Draw Rate" and "Visualization type" as it won't speed up and slow down the process time?

That i dont know, but i could imagine the GUI using more cpu when redering pictures faster. But its probably a very low amount.

I think it helped as the completion time just went down 5hrs but I am not really sure if OC'ing contributed to the total timing being reduced.

You get 50 points per complete project. Sometimes someone will not finish a project on time, and you might get lucky and download a partially finished project, which you get partial credit for.
Also in the FAQ:
Q:So when will I see some points on the stats page?
A: You get 50 points per completed project. The stats page refreshes every four hours.
I do not recommend or use the GUI version. It takes up CPU and memory overhead that could better be used for folding, that and it can only run one instance which is a waste if you have a dual core system.

OK but the GUI just sounds much easier to configure since there is nothing you need to configure really. If the console version "Folds" faster I might try it. So does it?

You should read the FAQ. The console is really pretty damn easy, and folds slighly faster (more idle CPU cycles).

I don't know which CPU you are running, but if it is dual core you should definatly be running two console clients: one for each core.

I hadn't known this about the projects... although I can at least say that these projects are rerun multiple times with variables tweaked, and to provide cross-checking to keep the erronous resuslts to a minimum.
Projects can be worth anywhere from 50 points to 600, just check out http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummaryC.html (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummaryC.html) and you can view every outstanding Work Unit, along with the expiration date and Credits (Points) it is worth. You can even view the description for what that particular WU does. :)

Thank you for that correction. I will post the point link in my FAQ! I really thought they were all 50 points each.
