I was looking into fixing my idler arm on my truck.
I came across this Q: and A: section of "About.com" or something.

Look at what the guy answering recommends....

Question:
I put my 1993 4x4 Chevy S-10 Blazer in the shop last week for a clunking in the front end on the passenger side when I turn or stop and vibration at 60 MPH plus. He put it up on the lift and said all he could see was the Idler arm was worn. He replaced that but it is still clunking and vibrating.

I was figuring it could be the CV joints or something in that area in the front end. Can you give me any of your thoughts and is it advisable for me to do the work myself? I have some mechanical experience and most of the tools

Answer: (partial)
It would pay you to try to actually hear the noise and see where it's coming from. Maybe get someone to drive it in a parking lot while you look at it. Maybe open the hood and climb in there while they drive around seeing if you can feel around for the clunk.

Lmao, so if anyone is looking for information on fixing there car perhaps they might want to look somewhere else? :)

Whole article. (http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl872e.htm)

Well I think the guy that responded has a point... you would have to strip the car apart, inspect everything, then reassemble it and hope you find a "clunking noise". Maybe if he took the mechanic to a Sonic drive in a few miles away they could narrow it down to a few hundread dollars in labor costs, and maybe find the problem after replacing a thousand or two in parts... I would think most ~15 year old cars would make clunking noises :-P

As is said in industry; Let it develop.

Then come see me when it is more obvious.

O and my point was in Bold. Go ahead and climb in the engine sit on it under the hood and drive around that way. You might very well find it. But you did not hear it from me. ;)

Sorry, I thought you were posting against the mechanic's advice... guess I should double check what subforum I'm in before I post...

I rather did like the point in bold though ;) It's just to bad if a mechanic told their customers that everytime someone comes into their shop they'd soon go bankrupt.. :-P

I'd pay to see that :) :P
