I don't own one and IMHO i don't want one. I don't think computers are made to be used with a widescreen, widescreens are for watching television/movies and that's not exactly what I do with my rig. Must say i've never used one though, maybe I'd change my mind if i did, but as for now I see no reason to put the money down for one. Just my 2 cents.

Yes!! I know I said this before, but playing CounterStrike at 1920by1200 resolution is simply a completely different game... It will turn any gun into a sniping weapon, and made aiming at people's heads pretty easy... not even counting that sneaking up on someone with such a wide vision arc is pretty hard ;)

What made it shine is playing HL2 and HL Episode one at widescreen resolutions with the eyecandy on... it really adds to the immersion effect of being in the game to have a large field of vision. Only problem is HL2.1 was to much for my laptop, and I didn't get the model with any type of video input. At 1280by720 ya tend to lose a good bit of the widescreen effect compared to the larger widescreen modes... :???:

Hopefully not speaking to soon.

Well the monitor showed up. It has a scuff in the top and bottom of the bezel in the middle. So I contacted Dell and they told me they are shipping me a new monitor and to go ahead and use this one until the new one shows up.

Man it looks nice hooked up here at work. Taking it home in a couple of hours and firing up some gaming. Pretty cool to have Bjor3d.com and MSN screens both up and not having to side scroll to read them.

That's too bad. I have been lucky, because of the hundreds of Dell shipments I have received they have never been damaged and were always very well packed. Sounds like something went wrong at the boxing facility.

Now, UPS losing a package... that is a whole other story.

Nice to hear Dell cares about their customers enough to ship a completely new one first! I honestly wouldn't have really expected that from them with such high-value hardware.

Ok less than 5 hours using the monitor at home but gaming most the time. OMFG, that about sums it up. If I would of known how cool having a big monitor like this was I would of gotten one a year ago.

The nice thing is if the game does not support wide screen then just drop your desktop to 1600x1200 and play at that. The games still fill the entire screen and look great. They do not even seem squashed or anything like I thought they would.

So far I "only" got a 19" WS Fujitsu screen in addition to my regular 21" ViewSonix TFT. I probably gonna get a bigger WS later as I want the extra width when working.

I actually tried to order a 24" DELL 3 times from their website and then gave up as their whole systems was completely screwed up. Neither IE or Firefox let me actually finish my buy, just throwing me back to the shopping cart, this time with a monitor that was free :). And then it crashed with an ASP.Net error (the site). Very confusing. But maybe the tech gods told me to wait a while :).

does gaming on a widescreen really put that much more strain on your computer? My laptop has a widescreen, but from what I can tell it just stretches everything left to right so all the images look kinda squashed.

I'm waiting just a little while before getting one as some really cool fully HDCP monitors will be released in late August or early September that are in the same price range as the Dell.

The Dell is only HDCP compatible at 780p and not 1080p so waiting will hopefully give me both for about the same price.

does gaming on a widescreen really put that much more strain on your computer? My laptop has a widescreen, but from what I can tell it just stretches everything left to right so all the images look kinda squashed.

Your laptop LCD screen has to have a true Widecreen display for you to use a widescreen resolution on it without a distorted image or a letterbox looking display. So either it wasn't a wide aspect display to begin with, or the game you tested with doesn't support a widescreen resolution very well.

Using a widescreen does add a larger load to the system, because it is inherently a bigger resolution you are using. ;) 1024x768 is a standard non-widescreen resolution. The wide-screen version of that same exact display would be 1280x768. Add an equal sign and 1280x768 = 983,040 pixels, or 196,608 pixels more that your GPU must render over the basic 1024x768 resolution.

Sbrehm, Best Buy has that 22" widescreen for $400 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7802577&type=product&id=1142292834310&ref=06&loc=01 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7802577&type=product&id=1142292834310&ref=06&loc=01)...

I went and saw them again at one of our local BB stores and talked to the folks at length about them..........;) On my next trip to town I'm bringing the Monster Rig with me to demo the screen in the store to see how well I like it.

Kougar
08-05-2006, 02:42 AM
Are you serious?? They will let you do that? I assume using the display model then?? I'd like to watch the looks on everyone's faces when you show up hauling that Big Rig in tow... ;)

Bio-Hazard
08-05-2006, 04:53 AM
Yah, it's the display model.............;)
All you have to do is make a big enough stink in front of all the other customers telling them all about the ups and downs of differant LCD's with color banding, dead pixels and backlight bleeding through, they'll let you do anything you want to get you to shut-up.
Actually, the one guy I ended up talking too (manager) was also a review writer for a small web site, I did reconize it but he said he nows my main screen name and my Monster Rig from the web. It's a small world after all......;)
The main reason I want to do this is because all the displays in mose stores are connected to a big splitter and the LCD's all run at 1024x768 regardless of screen size, so there's no way you can really tell just how good or bad they really are unless you run them alone at their native rez and the guy agreed with me 100%

werty316
08-05-2006, 05:01 AM
They don't have display computers to try the monitor on?

Bio-Hazard
08-05-2006, 05:11 AM
I suppose you could do that, but there's not a whole lot of stock retail systems at places like BB and the like that will push a 22 inch wide screen. And there's even less that have the games I play installed to check for ghosting and image quality..........;) And lets not forget that most all OEM systems do not have a DVI out, onboard video and 15 pin sub D is about what you get.

Ok I asked my wife for a xmas present of this new gateway 24inch widescreen monitor at best buy. I like buying monitors from best buy cause if there is a pixel defect they will replace them no questions asked unlike newegg. Here is the weblink and I think its the same as the dell 24inch in features.

Second reason is that we have about $300 in gift/return cards to spend at best buy so I think I have a good chance in getting this $680 monitor for xmas (plus we have a 10% coupon too). Any thoughts on this monitor before I go into "wishing - begging mode" with my wife (God I hate to admit that I dont wear the pants in my family - lol)?

I think Dell's 2407 maybe a tad better with HDCP support. saw it's on sale for a little less than 600.

Well I just joined the club, I picked up a Gateway at my local Best Buy and so far couldn't be happier!

As far as Gateway vs. Dell that will probably be a controversy for years to come...this monitor has none of the issues that some of the Dell monitors reportedly do...No Banding, No dead pixels, No major backlight bleed and it looks just as good or even a tad better in my opinion. I also like the fact that I could buy it locally and not have to have it shipped.

It's also the only 24" monitor on the market currently that does 1:1 pixel mapping. This sucka's huge even after coming from a 21.3" Samsung...Colors are much brighter and more vibrant as well.

does widescreen help gaming that much?

Scott
12-04-2006, 01:50 PM
Well if the game supports the view then yes. It is like you see a movie at a theater on the big screen. When you see it on TV usually the left and right sides are cut off and not visable. So you do the same in a game. More content on the screen with out having to rotate left or right.

Actually helps out alot in a FPS.:jawdrop:

I think that WS are worth it, and if you don't have the cash for a big one like the 24" or larger, you'll get the same added game play area in the current ling of 20.1" or 22" ones, I truely love my Samsung WS, and you can't beat the price.

Well guys, I spoke to soon; the Gateway was perfect until I started gaming and it had absolutely the worst motion blur I've ever seen on a monitor and this was in several games. I went back to Best Buy to be with its friends and now I'm stuck back with a 17" Viewsonic until I can get something better...I'm really wanting a S-IPS panel but currently they aren't available in 24" or 22". The Apple Cinema 23" has a S-IPS and so did the HP 23" monitors, they Apple is way over priced and the HP 23" has been replaced by their 24" model using an S-PVA panel.

NEC will have a great 24" out after th 1st of the year, but I can't wait that long...any suggestions?

I also like very much buying monitors from best buy cause they take em back even if 1 pixel doesnt work and thats why I will not buy monitors through newegg. Dont know about dell policy....just my 2 cents.

I absolutely supports HDCP, I tested that... If I didn't game it would have been a perfect monitor, even though there was some very slight motion blur outside of the games. Just goest to show, dodn't buy the first generation of something new like this. Isnt their a distortion of some kind on the 22" widescreen with the 16:10 aspect ratio and resolution of 1680x1050 and versus 24" at true hidef at 16:9 and 1920x1200?

It seems to me that true hidef with no distortion starts with the 24" and up widescreem monitors...

Well... "Dude you aren't getting a Dell"! They made a great deal until I ordered and then they told me 2-3 weeks before they could ship, so we're back to square one, Yuck!

I need a monitor like in the next week! I'm looking at everything out there now, it appears the BenQ 24" is now the best product out, it's only drawback it it doesn't do 1:1 mapping on anything other than DVI and HDMI, and since I won't use the component connections for anything but TV and not an Xbox of PS it may be the monitor of choice.

Thoughts?

I personally don't see any distortion in my Wide-Screen Viewsonic 22"...there are even some games that natively support this resolution of 1680x1050.

Maybe you're right, but like I said, I have no distortion and no problems so far, and I heard no one complaining about this LCD.

I can only recommend on this Viewsonic VX2235 22" Wide-Screen LCD, which I'm VERY satisified with...:icon_tiphat:

NO, NO, NO, DON'T DARE to get the cheaper Chi-Mei 22", since you'll regret it!!! :frown:

I know it's the same company that supplies the LCD Matrix to Viewsonic, but EVERYTHING ELSE is different. The 'plastics' and other 'electronic' components, except the LCD matrix, have much much higher quality in Viewsonic screen. At least that's what I've heard.

A friend of mine bought the Chi-Mei 22" LCD and afer 3 months his LCD just died...so I don't know if it's a coincidence or a BAD brand LCD. :jawdrop:

Don't worry Chi Mei isn't on my short list...it's down to the BenQ FP241W, the NEC LCD20WMGX2, or possibly the Samsung 225BW. The first two I'll have to order but New Egg has a good price on the BenQ right now and I had found another $50 discount coupon. The BenQ use the AU Optronics panel which is very good and probably second in quality to the AS-IPS panel used by the NEC monitor.

The NEC is probably the best overall monitor of the three listed as far as image quality, color, and overall performance is concerned, but it's only a 20" wide screen.

I'm really not fond of the TN panels so the Samsung at best is a long shot.

NEC will have a 90 series 24" AS-IPS based monitor as well as a 26" AS-IPS based monitor out the second week in January, but given the price of their 21" 90 series monitor ($1,150) I'm sure they will both be out of my league.

Yeah...maybe you're right. Afterall, Chi-Mei is among the biggest LCD panels manufacturers and they have a huge Taiwanese market as well as other markets with (I'm pretty sure) a lot of satisified customers. But again, if I had to choose between Viewsonic and Chi-Mei, I would definitely go with the Viewsonic, even if I had to pay the extra money...

Dells use whatever panel that they can get the best deal on at the time they look to release a new model, same a Viewsonic.

Dell has contacted panel makers for 19-inch widescreen LCD monitor panels, according to Digitimes.

Taiwan-based AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) are expected to win the orders from Dell.

1. Severe input lag
2. Motion blur
3. Slight ghosting

Well back to Circuit City it went, I had it for less than 24 hours and those idiots at CC charged me a 15% restocking fee...this is a first! Best Buy has never charged me a restocking fee. I have never been charged a restocking fee at CC until today and the customer rep pointed it out to me on the fine print on the receipt...Well they just lost a good customer.

Ok I got a new 24" Gateway monitor for xmas (superdiscounted through coupons, sales which put the price at $610). I dont have any of the problems that seem to trouble others including Miles....no ghosting, no buzzing noise, no heat problems, no dead pixels, natta!

Anyway, all I want to do with this monitor is do work (yuk!), do web surfing, play a few pc games.

The only other feature I am really looking to do is either hook up a slingbox (or alternative) and pipe in a football or basketball game through the PIP function that I want to watch while Im doing some of the yucky stuff. The real feature that I was looking for was 1:1 scaling so that the image looks normal and not "stretched" to fit the screen.

I guess it comes down to what you want to use the monitor for. I dont want to hook up an xbox or anything like that to this monitor. All I want to do is pipe in some sports game from time to time while the "fam" watches what they want to watch in the downstairs living room.

I can get 1080p through the dvi if I want to watch a movie at my workdesk (god know why) or 1080i through a slingbox to watch a football game.

Am I missing something here? I have 2 days to return this monitor to Best Buy for a full refund...help please.

I told ya so! :ahhhhh:

I have found that it is best to keep the Dell 2407 on "Desktop" mode, you can visibly see the difference in color accuracy/improvement over the other two modes. Additionally I tend to start noticing a subtle banding or color flickr on some webpages when I use "Multimedia" or "Gaming" modes, but none at all with "Desktop". I forgot what site also found this out otherwise I would link to them.

Well Im back to the drawing board. I took the gateway 24 back to best buy because I decided to test everything on the monitor and 2 of the 4 usb ports did not work - it does seem that when you search the web on this 24 inch gateway that it been having "production" problems like usb ports not working, overheating, ghosting, buzzing noises, etc. They didnt have another in stock so I got all of my money back.

Well I was at least part of the widescreen club for 2 weeks. Looks like Ill wait a while cause it seems like some new lcds are hitting the market over the next month or two.

thanks a lot.

Well, I originally was looking for the 2407 as I like Dell's panel a bit more and also I like the warranty. But got a deal on the monitor which is better than dell. Sucks as dell has not got any good deal on 2407, otherwise, I would get that one.

So far, I noticed that there's some banding issue with the grandient, which my old 1905 does not show (I got to say I think my 1905 does a much better job in the image than this one does). I may have to get it exchanged from gateway as I read that newer production seems to have most of the problem fixed. Maybe I should sel lthis and get the 2407.

Haven't yet fully tested this display yet but I am slowly getting used to the whole large widescreen display now. There seem to be color reproduction problem with this one (not sure if this is true or not) but it seems like the old monitor just looked slightly better overall.

I was surprised to see the x1600xt that I got in the system can actually chug along with the display (was worried that it might not work:)). Now just have to wait for the 7800gt back form gigabyte (man it took them like over a month to get the rma, well they claim that they repair rather than replace, so we'll see). Not sure if the 7800 will offer a better image than the x1600xt.

Kougar

My old 9600XT has zero issues running a Dell 2407WFP and making it look great. That's two generations older than a x1600XT. ;)

Banding is a known issue with Gateway's own 24" monitors, so unless you are sure you got an older version I wouldn't suggest going through the mess of exchanging them. Dunno of any recent deals on the 2407, but they were like $530 during Black Friday sales last year...

I think some of the slightly older nvidia card has trouble with super high resolution through DVI. The monitor is the Dec model (which from what I understanding is fairly new as they got Jan model which is slightly newer and maybe less trouble). I think maybe I will hold onto this one and wait for a few month before getting it RMAed to be sure that I got the new model. I know I totally missed the 2407 deals, was so hoping it would go around that price. I actually got the gateway for 550 (no tax, shipping) with 2 year warranty. It's not great deal but a decent one I think. Though I do stuck with this monitor if there's problem as I can't return back to the store:)

I am not aware of the HC 2407 monitor, but with Dell so aggressive pushing the price of the monitor, I think myabe they either want to clear the 24'' and push for 27'' or something is on the line.

Okay, just a quick update on the monitor, for those who maybe thinking of getting the gateway monitor, be sure to install the eztune software and use that to adjust the brightness and the contrast. I didn't do that the first couple of days and the color is way off. It won't show the correct black and all other colors (always too dark) and white looks too white and bright. After I install the software and adjust the contrast and brightness accordingly, it now looks much better. The banding is also less noticeable, although they are still there but it's less annoying.

27" 8) Lol, and to think this 20" will be a major upgrade for me. I'm still using 17" CRT's on all 4 of my computers. I'll just have to be jealous of ya :)

I was able to run the beta of ARCA Sim Racing last weekend on a 20" widescreen and the decision after that was a no brainer. Widescreen IS the way to go for SIM racing. I'm sure it will do CounterStrike Source and COH justice also :)

It will make editing the website easier as well. I run 1024x768 at home and that is the resolution the site is designed for. To test it at higher resolutions I have to change my resolution to see how it displays. Now I can run a wider resolution by default without a concern about refresh rates causing the blinking screen :)

I'll let you know what I think. The specs look pleasing to me. 5ms, 300 cd/m2, 1000:1.

If you are going to upgrade again, I don't see any point in buying the 27". Skip it and pay a little more for the 3007WFP-HC. You'd get a bigger resolution (27" is the same resolution as 24"), 92% color gamut instead of 72%, and of course much, much more screen. I think the hardforum users are trying to get Hardocp to do more LCD reviews...that would be great imo.

Dont think Ill ever be able to join the club. Just picked up from Best Buy the new HP 2207w for $289 (if interested for that price I can tell you how - just reply). Its really gorgeous for a 22" TN panel, has an adjust/pivot stand. Reminds me of the sammy 226w but with a much better stand. Didnt notice any ghosting, lag, anything...except...

....14 dead pixels (8 bright and 6 dark). Ouch! Packed it back up and takin it for a trade tomorrow at best buy. Avoid Circuit City because of their 15% restocking fee.

My luck is just plain bad!

Print the "see sale price in cart" screen and take it to circuit city:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-22-Widescreen-Monitor-W2207/sem/rpsm/oid/176653/catOid/-12965/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Print out this circuit city $40 coupon:
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=717090&start=0

Buy the monitor at Circuit city. Take receipt to Best Buy...they will match the price. Take back circuit city monitor to circuit city. Take home Best Buy HP 2207w for $289 with 30 day worry-free warranty.

However, Im on the second hp 2207w and guess what...they must have had a bad batch cause I still have around 10 stuck/dead pixels. This one was last one in inventory so Ill keep it a few days and work on the stuck pixels to see if I can get them unstuck. Gorgeous monitor with excellent adjust/pivot stand.

Ouch, that's some bad luck, Chakka :( I hope that they will replace the monitor for you if those pixels don't show up...

Hmmm, I guess I won't be able to take advantage of this deal... There are no Circuit City's that I know of in Canada, or near my area. :( Thanks for the info though ;)

I'm surprised that Best Buy honoured that price without much hassle... I've had friends try and deal with their customer service/returns in the past, and it wasn't the most pleasant experience :?

Oh I dont have the nerve to buy online because of dead pixel problems and stupid return policies. Looks like 3rd time could be a charm. Went to a different best buy and noticed that my old 2 monitors were Jan 07 and this last one is a Feb 07 batch. Looks like the Feb 07 might have 2 dark pixels stuck (red on green) but the backlight is very good with almost no bleed...much better than 18-20 stuck pixels on white and dark screens.

I guess if you interested in the HP w2207, look for a Feb 07 or later before you buy. This monitor is really well worth the money for $289 even if it has 1 or 2 stuck pixels. The stand is superior to the sammy 226w and it pivots lengthwise. Looks like 1:1 works with option fill to aspect ratio cause I just booted an old 1280x1024 game and had black bars on the sides. Plus it has a 2 port usb hub on the side too.

If I keep this Ill probably upgrade in a few years to a 30 inch monitor when they are around $300 or less.

Okay so I finally became a member of the WS club :)
It took me some time to find the best bang for the buck and went for the S-PVA screen. I bought this: Gateway FPD 2185W (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1921881,00.asp)

It has great specs, nice features [almost on par with DELL] and a price that is more than appealing. I got it today and was a bit frustrated by the image quality with the VGA cable. After replacing it with a DVI cable I am 100% sure that buying that screen was the right choice.

I do not like Neweggs pixel policy, but their return policy is excellent and their customer service is much easier to deal with than a retail store. Good luck with your pixels situation and glad you like it.

Congrats on the monitor upgrades guys! Since all of your time spent on a computer is spent staring at the screen it's the best upgrade to have really. :)

Chaka, you might be waiting until 2010 before 30" models they that cheap!

I'll let y'all in on a little secret though... during the last Xmas sales, the Dell 3007WFP-HC could be had for ~$1,100 or so, give or take a little... The price will only go down next Xmas. ;)

I think the LCD technology may change dramatically in the next few years with LED backlights, 120 mhz refresh rates and wider color gamuts. I decided to settle with a really decent HP w2207...its much easier on the wallet since I only spent $289.99 plus tax and eliminate buyers remorse if I decide upgrade later...

Samsung 245BW, 24" thin bezel with tilt, height, and rotation.

Its little known that you can take the stand off and remove a holding screw for 90 degree rotation. Great for comics and forums, tall screen is tall.

Cruisin' with a Soyo 24" I just scored from the OfficeMax $299.99 deal. This thing is HUGE compared with my old Samsung 19" CRT. (doh) The Sammy's guns were getting SO out of alignment I couldn't read text without squinting and it was starting to lose brightness. I bought the wife a 20" Samsung last X-mas and have been pissed at her all year. She walked by last night after I set the Soyo up and glared at me "Is that bigger than mine?" Yay, Today I got a 22" HD Gateway Widescreen Monitor. :) It's meant to be a present for me from my parents for christmas but they said that I could use it earlier. :) I am so happy, I was really waiting for this day. Here is a link for the monitor details:

http://www.gateway.com/accessories/product/1541322R.php?seg=hm

It has a nice glare on the screen and the borders so it looks like those nice shiny Laptop monitors. I am really happy. :-D

The cool thing about it is that it doesn't use buttons for the menu, but a touchpad. So you just have LEDs light up on the side of the panel with pictures on it and you can tap those and the menu comes up. :) Really nice in my opinion.

It has all the composit connections and an S-Video connection. As well as a HDMI connector, DVI connector, and a VGA connector.

In my opinion it was a good prize for what it know. :) I guess my dad wen't with a bit more expensive monitor just because I had a surgery not too long ago, and he said that because I had to suffer though all the pain he could spend a little more on me.

What do you guys think?

P.S. I'll post some pictures once I finish my homework. :)

I have had a Dell 3007WFP-HC since its release in Denmark. I would have prefered it had more connection options, like the 3008WFP, but I can live without them. It would be even better, if it had something like the HQV Realta chip.

Hehe, you guys should try this out on my screen! I have a 42" plasma run to my computer with a HDMI to DVI cable (not an adapter, the cable actually has the correct ends on). The HD audio is hooked up to my home theater system and I have the logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo. Stuff looks awesome in 1080i. (Plasma is a little older, so no 1080p)

I also have a 32" LCD in the bedroom working at 720p on my laptop.

My Dad's comp has a 22" Dell monitor. Widescreen, and is awesome!.

My parent's have a "family" tv in the living room that is a 57" DLP Rear Projection HDTV, 1080p resolution and is widescreen (However HD content is hardly used on it... my dad is too stupid to get off of cable).

I own a 47" 3LCD Rear-projection HDTV 1080p resolution and is awesome! I literally own it in the sense that I work my ass off to pay it off not my parents. So don't call me spoiled. If you do you will feel like an idiot when you see my page long response listing off all the work I do... Yeah I make more than the $50 a month I need to make to pay it off within the financing I have, but I still do a lot of work for a teenager!

Well I'm very happy with my dell 14.1" Widescreen on my laptop. It displays at 1440x900 and I have been very happy with it up to now. Any larger and it would be too bulky to lug around. Any smaller and watching movies wouldn't be particularly comfortable. Here are a few screenshots:

My dad planned on buying the same 226BW, but eventually ended up buying the Samsung 2243BW newer model. Both the 226BW and 2243BW have pretty much the same performance, except (I think) a bit better contrast for the 2243BW and also the fact the 2243BW has a PIVOT option (not that I know someone who's really using it...)

I still own my Viewsonic VX2235WM 22" LCD Screen, but hopefully my next one will be a Dell 24". ;-)

What res do you play it on? When I was using onboard video, it wouldn't support 1680 x 1050, and it looked "OK" at 1280 x 800.

i play at 1280x1024 "widescreen" instead of 1280x1024 "standard" as those are two available options in the 360's video display options

I just received an 24" Acer P244Wbii from UPS. Running home in a few minutes to hook it up. I'll try to post some thoughts on it once I get a chance to burn it in a bit.

While it isn't high end by any means, it probably falls into the mid-range category I suspect. Can't complain about the price point and 1920x1080 res. I nearly went with a P243 which had a 1920x1200 res. Really, the difference is negligible and the 1080 means native 1080p dimensions. Heck, considering I was running at 1280x1024 for years. Bigger is better, whatever it is.

Though.. with one upgrades, comes another. I suspect I may be dumping my 8800GT 512mb for something that can run at a healthier clip at that high res when gaming. The wife is going to kill me if I spend another dime this year. *gulp*

ZAP! Ooops. *hides the screwdriver* I think the Video Card just died on me. mmm.. Honey, can I have the credit card?

Update on 24" Acer P244Wbii:

A great wide screen monitor for a great price. 1920x1080 res is great. I don't even care that it isn't 1920x1200. Dimensions fit better for 1080p scaling this way. Don't fret over the res, it is splitting hairs.

Bright. Sharp. Great color. Fast. Ran Fallout3 nicely on my 8800 GT 512mb at native 1920x1080 res.

I moved the monitor back on my desk, and I sit further back now. It is that big. I sometimes find myself turning my head to see parts of the screen.

Vista 'is certified'. Runs perfectly on Vista x64. Monitor was recognized, correct driver was installed by Vista.

The only quirkiness I found was I had to initially boot up using VGA(D-Sub) mode. VGA cable and HDMI cables both were connected. Switched the driver from analog to digial mode in Vista, rebooted, then set the monitor to auto detect. It seems to be using the HDMI now as far as I can tell.

I saw very minor light bleed on bottom and top on a total black screen. Again, this is normal for LCD's and it is hardly noticable. Unless you are super nitpicky this won't be an issue for 95% of you.

Viewing angle is not an issue. I shift around and change the height of my chair now and then. Not one single problem. Unless you are running circles around the room, viewing angle will not be a problem.

The provided docs were rather sparse, but the ADM color management tool was easy to use and helped quicky sync and tune the monitor. Install it from the CD, it has an update feature (though it might have automatically grabbed the latest version from the net). I basically only had to adjust contrast and brightness, more to suit the environment and my preference.

I got it for $269 on a black friday deal, though it can be found for around $320-$349 online. Don't pay more especially at the big name ripoff retail stores.

Oh. Also it does NOT have a glossy screen. The Acer P243 model does have a glossy screen and is the older model. I nearly bought that one. I am glad I went with the P244.

Upgraded from an old Viewsonic P95f 19" CRT (trinitron). The sucker still works like a charm, is as sharp, bright, and vibrant as ever. Even then, this LCD blows it away.

Dell 2405 FPW here. Unfortunately have to offload it in London as I'm shipping over to NYC in April! So - looking for a new monitor, preferably max $300 but may possibly be able to twist my wife's arm for $400.

I have an XFX 8800GTX that I would prefer to keep, so at a crossroads. I was thinking of a 1680x1050 22" so I can bleed a year more out of the card before upgrading, but be stuck with a lower resolution; alternatively I could just shell out for a 24" 1920x1200 monitor again and be real to the fact that to keep up with graphics heavy gaming you need to shell out the cash for constant upgrades.

I will be checking out Xmortis' newest purchase as it came highly recommended, but if anyone else has strong suggestions or knows of some upcoming new monitors, I'm all ears!

Cheers,
Nick

I may be wrong but will your card ( considering you're coming from the U.K. ) be compatible with our power set-up?
Or is it all the same voltages and stuff?
And if you decide on a different monitor then just think Samsung as it's basically the same thing as your Dell. I've heard they make the screens for Dell too but I'm not 100% on that.
If it is true I probably could have gotten a 24" Samsung a lot cheaper than my 24" Dell.

Funnily enough, I actually bought the card in the US, when the UK Pound was still strong against the USD, so works all fine and dandy.

I was looking at the Samsungs, especially this one at $269: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4226589&CatId=3774. But saying that, there was a HP that was 'hugely' discounted, that was $100 more expensive - but going to have to see if it will be worth that much more, here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3905519&CatId=3774.

All in all though, I don't think I could really go wrong with either model, and I guess if the quality of picture is that much better then since I spend a large amount of time in front of the monitor I could justify it :P
