I think we have enough "i" products.

More product excitement in the Apple pipeline

During Apple's most recent financial conference call, the company's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer made a statement suggesting that Apple is definitely working portable music player with communication capabilities. Over the past several months, speculation accumulated on Apple's development in the mobile space, specifically developments in communications.

In response to a question about competition with Sony's Walkman mobile phones, Oppenheimer said "as regards to cell phones, we do not think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change, and we are not sitting around doing nothing."

While Apple has had a good deal of success with its iPod, competition is rising in the portable music space. Mobile phone manufacturers are introducing new phones almost on a daily basis, and most recent phones have MP3 playback capabilities. Nokia's N91 for example contains 4GB of built in storage capacity.

Oppenheimer concluded the topic on the mobile phone market by saying "we are very confident in our ability to compete in the marketplace, and we are very excited about what we have in the product pipeline. You know that I cannot comment on that." Apple is the owner of iphone.org.

I'd sure like to see what they think can top the latest RAZR model phones... I'm going to have to find a Motorolla store that demos those because I want to hear the mp3 sound quality on them. :-P

Cell phones are dumb because they have junk that is useless. Dialing a number is all you really need.

Having a keypad that won't wear down or scratch up, a pretty screen to play bejeweled on while I kill 25 minutes waiting on various people to finish whatever, having no external antennae to break or get in the way, having a very compact form factor that isn't a problem to take with you, having battery life measured in days instead of hours, the ability to instantly photograph anything instead of copying down an entire college ruled page of notes or descriptions, and the ability to turn it into as big a flash mp3 player as you want isn't exactly junk in my opinion. ;) I'd even use the thing for AIM/MSN/Yahoo messaging if it wasn't an extra $10 a month...

There aren't that many people like you out there who really use those functions though. And you are right about the i thing. I am so sick of apple naming everything they have beginning with i. It's so damn irritating. And they sure as hell won't stop doing it now with the popularity of the ipod.

I use these funktions too, and if i wanted something that could do less then there is no reason not to get a different phone. But for the most part you dont use all the funktions, that doesnt mean you'll never use them... I use my mp3 player and my note system along with my cam. but having found myself useing other funktions such as the calender... It all depends on how easy it is to transfer from pc to cell.

But this phone might end up as the samsung and bang and olufsen phone, Delicious but horrible interface.. Maybe apple will make this phone okay once they leave out Motorola :P

I see most of the functions as simply another advertising point. While I appreciate the technology and what they're able to do with cell phones, I cannot see everyone taking advantage of most of the advanced features, just like the "video" portion of the iPod Video... nice feature, but how many people use said feature in the real world?

Oddly enough, I saw more than one or two people watching video on a video iPod around my college's campus and even during classes. But I'd have to say far more people were doing the same with their laptops... I mean, why pay $400 for a spinning hard drive when you can spend that much for a spinning hard drive encased inside a laptop shell? :-P

By long and far everyone else else has a cell phone glued to their hand and is instant messaging, txt messaging, using the walkie talkie feature, or web surfing on their phones. Everytime I hit the local price club or the mall I see a family using them to simply talk to each other from opposite ends of the store. A friend of mine that works at IBM finally got himself a Samsung Blade, and is currently making use of the GPS and Google Traffic options with it, along with the more standard features.

Geez, I dispise that the cell phone has become such a common thing in our lives that we cannot walk over to the person on the other side of the store, we must instead call them... :(

I have no doubt that many people are taking advantage of the various features, but does the phone come off as a "jack of all trades, master of none" kind of device?
